Almost every woman from the 80s has a perm story.

Somebody's mom did it in the kitchen.

Somebody's aunt did it in the laundry room.

Somebody sat there for what felt like an entire Saturday while those rollers pulled so tight their eyebrows practically changed zip codes.

The smell was the worst part... that unmistakable perm solution that could clear a room faster than a fire drill.

And no matter what picture was on the box, the result was always a surprise.

You went in dreaming of soft, glamorous, cascading curls.

Two hours later, you came out looking less like a rock singer and more like you had stuck your finger in a light socket.

Of course, at the time, nobody admitted it. We smiled for the school picture, sprayed on more Aqua Net, and pretended everything was going according to plan.

That was the beauty of the 80s. We committed.

Bad perms. Questionable fashion choices. Hair that could survive a tornado but not a humid afternoon.

We gave it our all.

Today, people can walk into a salon, show a dozen photos on their phone, and leave with exactly the look they wanted. Back then, Mom had a box from the drugstore, a prayer, and confidence that far exceeded her qualifications.

And somehow, those perm disasters became some of the funniest memories we carried into adulthood. We remember sitting at that kitchen table, laughing, complaining, and hoping for the best.

And judging by a lot of old family photos...hoping was doing a lot of heavy lifting.
