37 NIGERIANS DIED IN NIGERIA SECURITY AND CIVIL DEFENCE CORPS CUSTODY, WHAT HAPPENED?

On September 15 and 16, suspected illegal miners were reportedly arrested during NSCDC operations in Niger State. Days later, 37 of those detained were dead.

Read that again.

37 human beings entered the custody of the State. 37 human beings never came out alive.

They were accused of illegal mining. Fine. Arrest them. Investigate them. Prosecute them.
If guilty, let the law take its course. But custody must never become a death sentence.

The cause of these deaths is still being reportedly investigated. NSCDC initially cited a suspected disease outbreak. Other possibilities, including overcrowding, suffocation and exposure to hazardous chemicals, are being examined. Autopsies and forensic examinations have been ordered.

The Niger State NSCDC Commandant and key officers have stepped aside, while the State Government, NSCDC, Police and DSS are conducting investigations. Good.

Now let the investigation be truly transparent.
No cover-up. No premature verdict. No convenient explanation. Just THE TRUTH.

Because the State may arrest a suspect. The State must not become the reason that suspect dies.

Whatever they were accused of, they were human beings first. And when 37 people die in the custody of a government security agency, Nigeria cannot simply move on.

37 deaths demand answers.
37 families deserve the truth.
And justice must not stop at the prison gate.
