On 30 August 2026, a tragic mining accident occurred at a reclaimed site in Asaman Tamfoe, Eastern Region, when a group of illegal miners attempted to extract gold from the abandoned pit.
The mine collapsed, killing seven miners whose bodies were later recovered by rescue teams.
Authorities reported that four additional individuals were still believed to be trapped underground as search and rescue operations continued late into the day.Personnel from the Police Service, National Ambulance Service, NADMO, and local volunteers joined forces in the rescue effort, working under challenging conditions to reach those still missing.

Former Liverpool star and Senegal international Sadio Mané is launching a major agro‑industrial project in Casamance, with the new Bambaly Agro‑Industrial Park set to cover more than 500 hectares.
