The fan was introduced to France by Catherine de Medici and was initially reserved for the aristocracy. Fans were then considered true works of art with ivory, mother-of-pearl, or tortoiseshell frames and fabrics such as silk or lace.

The use of fans at court led to the creation of a coded language conducive to playful banter. After the French Revolution, this symbol of aristocracy disappeared to some extent, underwent changes, and became more widely used in the middle class.
From 1830, it experienced a second golden age during the Second Empire. Today, it has somewhat fallen out of fashion except in some countries like Spain, where it remains an accessory for flamenco dancers and a fashion statement.
