One of my favourite parts of a consultation is answering questions.
So many people feel overwhelmed by skincare advice online, and often the same questions come up time and time again.
If you’ve ever wondered something about your skin, there’s a good chance someone else has too.
I hope this helps make skincare feel a little less confusing and a little more achievable.
If there’s a question you’d like me to answer in a future Q&A, leave it in the comments below. ⬇️

One of the most common things I hear during a skin consultation is:
“I’ve been using the same skincare routine for months… so why has my skin suddenly changed?”
The truth is, your skin’s needs can change over time.
Hormones, stress, sleep, medication, the weather, lifestyle, age and changes to your skin barrier can all influence how your skin behaves.
That’s why a skincare routine that suited your skin six months ago may not be what it needs today.
Rather than automatically reaching for stronger products, it’s worth understanding why your skin has changed first.
Healthy skin isn’t about using the same routine forever.
It’s about understanding your skin and adapting your skincare as its needs change.

One of the biggest misconceptions I see in clinic is assuming oily skin can’t be dehydrated.
In reality, oil and hydration are completely different.
Sebum is oil.
Hydration refers to water content within the skin.
This means it is entirely possible to have an oily skin type while also experiencing dehydration, sensitivity and a compromised skin barrier.
In fact, some oily skins become trapped in a cycle of over-cleansing and over-exfoliation, leaving the skin increasingly stressed and reactive.
The goal isn’t to strip oily skin.
The goal is to create balance.
Healthy skin performs better.

If you’re new here, I thought I’d properly introduce myself 🤍
I’m Sam, an Advanced Skin Specialist based in Aintree, Liverpool.
My approach to skin has always been simple:
I believe healthy skin comes first.
While I work with a wide range of skin concerns and corrective treatments, I don’t believe in chasing results at the expense of skin health.
That’s why you’ll often hear me talking about barrier function, inflammation and creating strong foundations before progressing to more advanced treatments.
Every treatment plan is tailored to the individual because no two skins are the same.
My goal isn’t simply to improve how your skin looks.
It’s to help you understand your skin, feel confident in it and achieve results that are sustainable long-term.
Thank you for being here and trusting me with your skin journey. 🤍

Many people assume that tight, squeaky-clean skin means their cleanser is working.
In reality, it can be a sign that your skin barrier is struggling.
Healthy skin should feel comfortable after cleansing, not stripped.

If you’ve ever felt like your skin isn’t improving despite trying more products, stronger actives or regular exfoliation, this post is for you.
One of the most common misconceptions I see is the belief that if skin isn’t improving, the answer is always a stronger treatment.
In reality, many skin concerns are made worse when the skin barrier is already struggling.
When skin becomes overwhelmed, it can appear more sensitive, reactive, dehydrated and unpredictable - even when you’re investing in quality skincare.
This is why I don’t automatically recommend stronger treatments.
Before considering correction, I want to understand the health of the skin first.
Healthy skin responds better.
Sometimes progression is the right answer.
Sometimes support is.
Understanding the difference can make all the difference to your results.

One thing I wish more people understood about their skin is that healthier skin doesn’t usually come from doing more.
A lot of the time, people are trying so hard to improve their skin that they end up overwhelming it instead.
More products.More exfoliation.More actives.More switching routines trying to find “the thing” that finally works.
But skin often responds best when it feels supported, consistent and properly understood.
This is why I always focus on how the skin is behaving as a whole - not just chasing individual concerns.
Because when the barrier is functioning well and the skin is properly supported, everything tends to behave differently: - less redness, less reactivity, more consistency and healthier long-term results.
Good skin is rarely forced. It’s usually built gradually, with the right approach over time.
