There are a lot of myths about manual lymphatic drainage on social media. and while some contain a grain of truth, many oversimplify what this treatment can actually do.

Manual lymphatic drainage isn’t a miracle cure, and it isn’t a weight-loss treatment. It is, however, a well-established technique with recognised clinical applications, and it may benefit some people depending on their symptoms, medical history and treatment goals.

Understanding the science behind lymphatic drainage helps you make informed decisions and set realistic expectations.

Swipe through to separate fact from fiction.

Most people assume swelling is simply “water retention” …. but it’s often more complex than that.

Temporary swelling can be influenced by things like prolonged sitting or standing, hot weather, hormonal changes, injury, venous circulation and the lymphatic system. Understanding the possible cause is an important first step.

This guide explains some of the most common reasons swelling can occur and when it’s important to seek medical advice.

Save this post so you can come back to it later, and share it with someone who struggles with swollen legs, ankles or feet.

Have you ever noticed your swelling is worse after a long day at work, travelling or during hot weather?

Many people assume it’s simply part of getting older, standing all day, or “holding water.” While that can sometimes be true, persistent swelling may be your body’s way of telling you something needs investigating.

These are seven signs that swelling may deserve further assessment. Early assessment can help identify the underlying cause and ensure you receive the most appropriate advice or treatment.

If you’re living with persistent swelling, speak to your GP or healthcare professional. Manual lymphatic drainage may be beneficial in some cases, but only after the cause of the swelling has been appropriately considered.

Could it be lipoedema?

Lipoedema is a chronic condition that affects fat tissue and is thought to affect up to 11% of women. Despite this, it remains widely under-recognised and is often mistaken for obesity or lymphoedema.

Some common features may include:
• Symmetrical enlargement of the legs and/or arms
• Painful or tender fat
• Easy bruising
• A smaller waist compared with the lower body
• Fat pads around the knees
• Feet are usually not affected
• Symptoms often begin around puberty, pregnancy or menopause

Lipoedema cannot be diagnosed from photographs or social media posts. If these signs sound familiar, it’s important to speak with your GP or a healthcare professional experienced in assessing lipoedema.

The earlier it’s recognised, the sooner appropriate support and management can begin.

Every person is different, which is why a consultation and medical history are so important before treatment. MLD isn’t suitable for everyone, and part of my role is helping you decide whether it’s the right option for your individual needs.

Lymph Nodes

Your lymph nodes may be small, but they’re one of the busiest parts of your immune system.

As lymph fluid travels through your body, these tiny, bean-shaped structures help filter it while specialised immune cells monitor for bacteria, viruses and damaged cells.

I always tell my clients to think of it like this:

Lymphatic vessels are the highways, and lymph nodes are the security checkpoints.

Understanding how your lymphatic system works is the first step towards understanding swelling, fluid balance, and why keeping your lymphatic system healthy matters.

I’ll be sharing more evidence-based lymphatic education, anatomy and common myths to help you better understand your body.

Did you already know what lymph nodes actually do? 👇

The lymphatic system works throughout the entire body, not just in one area.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle technique designed to support the natural movement of lymph fluid. Depending on the individual, treatment may help support lymphatic flow in the face, neck, chest, abdomen, back and limbs.

People often seek MLD to help with:
• Puffiness and mild fluid retention
• Heavy or tired legs
• General feelings of congestion
• Recovery following periods of inactivity or exercise
• Overall lymphatic health and wellbeing

Every treatment should be tailored to the individual, taking into account their medical history, symptoms and treatment goals.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a supportive therapy and should not replace medical assessment or treatment. Persistent, unexplained or worsening swelling should always be assessed by a healthcare professional.

Feeling puffy, exhausted or stuck in a cycle of poor recovery?

Stress doesn’t just affect the mind. It can influence sleep, inflammation, recovery and how the body manages fluid.

While swelling can have many causes, chronic stress and poor recovery may be contributing factors that are often overlooked.

The good news? Small, consistent habits can make a difference.

Which symptom do you notice most: puffiness, fatigue, poor sleep or bloating?

Feeling more bloated, puffy or swollen than usual?

You’re not imagining it. During hot weather, blood vessels widen and fluid can collect more easily in the tissues, leaving you feeling heavier and more uncomfortable.

Lymphatic drainage helps support your body’s natural fluid movement, which is why so many people notice they feel lighter, less puffy and more comfortable afterwards.

This heatwave has a lot of people reaching for extra support.

Save this post if you’ve been feeling the effects of the heat.
