My lovely client came in today wanting me to fit extensions she already had. Her previous extensionist had fitted 125g, which was simply far too heavy for her fine hair. After just a few weeks, she had to remove them because of the discomfort. 😔

Her goal this time was never to add lots of length — she simply wanted a little more thickness, fullness and confidence. With her naturally fine hair, there was absolutely no need to overload it with unnecessary weight.

So, we went with 65g of nano extensions, carefully chosen and fitted to suit her hair and what she actually wanted. 🤍

It’s so important to remember that extensions aren’t a one-size-fits-all service. The amount of hair, method and weight should always be tailored to the individual client, their natural hair and, most importantly, their comfort.

Since November last year, I've been offering specialist dematting appointments, and ever since then I've made it my mission to raise awareness because this is something that affects far more people than most realise.

I recently contacted 15 salons to ask if they offered a dematting service. Only two knew what I was referring to, and neither offered the service.

I also visited a salon and simply asked if they provided dematting appointments. I didn't tell them whether I needed the service or not. The reaction and look of disgust I received was heartbreaking.

That experience stayed with me because so many vulnerable people spend months, sometimes years, building up the courage to ask for help. To finally reach out, only to be turned away or made to feel embarrassed, can be devastating.

I understand that many salons don't offer dematting because it's extremely time-consuming. But I truly believe that if a salon has a large team, having just one stylist trained to help—or at the very least knowing where to refer clients—could make an incredible difference.

I'm also incredibly proud to share that I am a finalist in the Specialist Salon category at the Health & Beauty Awards 2026. 🏆

The reason I've focused so much on dematting, rather than promoting my other services, is because of the difference it makes.

The relief, happiness and confidence I see when a client looks in the mirror after their appointment is something I'll never get tired of witnessing. It's so much more than hair.

Hair and mental health are closely connected.

Matting doesn't only happen because of mental health struggles. It can be caused by illness, disability, chronic pain, hospital stays, caring responsibilities, medication, grief, depression, anxiety, or simply life becoming overwhelming. It can happen to anyone.

Almost every client who has sat in my chair has said the same thing:

"I used to see stories like this and wonder how someone's hair could ever get that matted... until it happened to me."

You never truly understand until you're in that position yourself.

Every week I'm still contacted by people desperately looking for help, which shows just how much this service is needed.

My hope is that we continue changing the conversation around hair, compassion and mental health. Even if every salon can't offer dematting, they should at least know where to direct someone who needs help, rather than turning them away.
