Some real good reflective learning tonight, refreshing knowledge on palpation skills and interpreting findings on palpation. Always new things to learn along the way with these and this one was a good one to test my memory of muscles and their function. Sometimes it’s hard to keep so much information in my busy brain 🧠 it often falls out 😂

Saying no is always difficult, especially when meeting new clients. But I always aim to stay in my lane and work within my professional boundaries and what I’ve learnt in these situations is horse owners much prefer you to be honest and say this is outside of my competency or something just isn’t quite right.

Sometimes the horses tell you this themselves. Referring to the appropriate professional in many cases has shown me that trusting my instinct can often go along way to helping the 🐴

So hard, especially if you are new to the Profession, BUT .. If a horse presents with unexplained lameness, our role is not to try to massage the problem away or assume that muscular tension is the cause. We have to say no!!!! Muscle tightness, guarding and asymmetry may actually be secondary to pain or pathology elsewhere. Treating before the underlying cause has been investigated could mask important signs or mean we’re working on a horse that requires veterinary assessment first. Again, a huge no!!!!

🙏 This is where we need to be confident enough to say: “I’d like this investigated before we continue.”

That isn’t turning a client away. It’s good clinical reasoning, appropriate professional boundaries and putting the horse’s welfare first. This can be hard with a strong, insistent client, but please…stick to your guns!
