Hyperkeratosis is an excessive keratinization of the epidermis, in which the skin becomes thickened, hard, and often takes on a yellowish tinge. It develops as a defensive reaction to prolonged pressure and friction. If left untreated, it leads to the formation of painful cracks and fissures.
