You’ve probably seen all the headlines - “Gel nails are being banned!” But here’s what most of the headlines aren’t explaining…👇🏻

Firstly, gel itself isn’t getting banned. It’s a chemical in many nail products known as TPO.

So, what is TPO?
Trimethylbenzoyl Diphenylphosphine Oxide (TPO) is a chemical photo-initiator used in gel polishes, builder gels and acrylic systems to make them harden (cure) under UV or LED lamps.

- The testing that led to TPO being reclassified involved animals (laboratory rodents) being given high doses by mouth (oral exposure) to study reproductive effects. As nail professionals, we don’t ingest our gel products and neither do our clients! They’re applied to the nail plate, cured correctly and become part of a hardened coating. That’s a very different type of exposure from the studies that led to the reclassification.

The Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) previously assessed TPO and concluded it was safe for use in professional UV nail systems at specified concentrations when used as intended, there is very little in all the gel products that contain it.

However, once TPO was legally reclassified as a Category 1B reproductive toxicant, cosmetic regulations required it to be removed from products unless an exemption was granted. That exemption was not approved so manufacturers have been reformulating with TPO-free alternatives.

So don’t panic!!

- Gel nails aren’t disappearing.
- Your appointments aren’t being cancelled.
- The professional brands I use are moving to TPO-free formulas.
