💜 LIPEDEMA DOESN'T ALWAYS “LOOK” LIKE LIPEDEMA
In response to this comment:
"Use a picture of lipedema. This is an overweight woman with normal legs and none of the markers. It is causing a lot of confusion. Stop adding to it."
This is a comment from a follower.
And I welcome this comment. Because it illustrates that the confusion is there. Simply because there is not just one presentation of Lipedema.
So as I understand the comment. And appreciate the opinion, the question is...do we dismiss women with Lipedema that look "normal"? Because that too, can cause confusion and add to the problem
This is such an important conversation—and it’s also important to address a common misunderstanding that sometimes comes up in discussions like this.
When we show photographs or images of only advanced lipedema, significant fibrosis, large ankle cuffs, or lipo-lymphedema, we may unintentionally create another problem:
👉 Women who don't look like those pictures may assume they can't possibly have lipedema.
👉 And sometimes their healthcare providers may think the same thing.
But lipedema can exist long before the most recognizable outward changes develop in stages 2 and 3.
🌿 A woman does NOT have to be obese to have lipedema. Not all obese people have Lipedema. It is a genetic condition and it can exist in many forms.
I have seen women whose upper bodies are relatively lean and whose most noticeable physical characteristic is simply disproportionately heavier thighs or legs.
I have patients who's lipedema only exists in upper thighs and upper arms.
Last week I had someone that looked normal and just a little overweight but had all the symptoms in her thighs.
When you listen to their stories and examine the tissue, there may be much more going on:
💥 Pain or tenderness in the adipose tissue
🟣 Easy bruising
🪨 Areas of nodular, firm or altered tissue
🦵 Disproportionate fat distribution
💧 Heaviness or swelling sensations
⚡ Hypersensitivity to pressure
👖 Difficulty tolerating certain clothing or compression
🧬 A family history or hormonal pattern that raises additional questions
They may not have dramatic ankle cuffing.
They may not have severe fibrosis.
They may not have secondary lymphedema.
And they may not be obese.
They may have normal shape to their legs
💜 Their symptoms still deserve to be taken seriously.
Painful or increasingly firm/fibrotic adipose tissue can be an important clinical clue—particularly when it occurs alongside other characteristic features—and deserves appropriate evaluation rather than dismissal based solely on appearance.
And this is where EARLY RECOGNITION becomes so important. 🔎
And we are getting there slowly! .
Lipedema can be progressive, although the course varies considerably from person to person. We should not assume that every woman will inevitably progress to severe disease.
But we also shouldn't wait until someone develops dramatic tissue changes before we listen to her.
🌱 Earlier recognition creates an opportunity to support the person BEFORE the condition becomes more difficult to manage.
That may include:
👐 Appropriate manual and lymphatic support
🧦 Individualized compression when indicated
🚶 Movement and appropriate exercise
🥗 Support for overall metabolic and inflammatory health
💧 Attention to fluid and tissue health
🕸️ Monitoring for developing fibrosis or lymphatic dysfunction
💜 Education, self-management and—perhaps most importantly—validation of symptoms
We need to stop judging lipedema solely by what someone's legs look like.
And it’s also important to be careful not to swing to the opposite extreme—where only the most advanced or “textbook” presentations are seen as valid. That kind of thinking can unintentionally exclude the very people who are struggling in earlier stages and need support just as much.
The photograph is only part of the story.
💥 PAIN matters.
👐 TISSUE QUALITY matters.
🟣 BRUISING matters.
🦵 DISTRIBUTION matters.
💧 LYMPHATIC FUNCTION matters.
👂 And the patient's story matters.
Someone shouldn't have to reach an advanced stage before we start listening.
💜 Lipedema can look different. And earlier lipedema deserves recognition too.

Your Body Is Far More Intelligent Than We Realise
Think about what your body does every second without you even thinking about it:
Your heart beats
Your lungs breathe
Your digestive system works
Your hormones communicate
Your nervous system continually sends messages
Your cells repair and renew
The human body is extraordinary, reflexology doesn't force change, it is a gentle modality.
With reflexology, different areas of the feet, hands, face and ears correspond with different parts and systems of the body.
Rather than focusing only on one symptom, reflexology works holistically, with the intention of supporting the whole person and encouraging the whole body and mind towards greater balance.
One of the things I still find fascinating after more than 25 years as a reflexologist is how differently each person's body responds, all qualified reflexologists across the world notice that 🙏👍
We don't tell the body what to do.
We provide stimulation and relaxation, and allow that wonderfully intelligent body to respond in its own way.
Your body has been looking after you your entire life. However, due to various experiences in your life, you may have issues with your body and mind/emotions. Perhaps it is time to support yourself to support it all to function in a more balanced way.

🌿 Reflexology & Your Endocrine System
A Gentle Way to Support Hormonal Health
Your endocrine system is a remarkable network of glands that produce hormones — tiny chemical messengers that travel through your bloodstream and help regulate almost every function in your body.
These hormones influence:
✨ Sleep
✨ Energy
✨ Mood
✨ Stress
✨ Metabolism
✨ Growth
✨ Fertility
✨ Blood sugar
✨ Bone health
When your body is under chronic stress, inflammation, illness, or hormonal change, these delicate systems can become disrupted.
Reflexology is a gentle complementary therapy that applies pressure to specific reflex points on the feet, hands, or ears. While research is still evolving, studies suggest reflexology may help activate the parasympathetic (“rest and digest”) nervous system, improve relaxation, reduce perceived stress, and enhance overall well-being. These effects may indirectly support healthy endocrine function by reducing one of the body’s biggest hormonal disruptors: chronic stress.
Let’s explore the incredible glands that make up your endocrine system…
🧠 1️⃣ Pituitary Gland — “The Master Gland”
Location: Base of the brain
What it does:
The pituitary produces hormones that regulate many other endocrine glands, including the thyroid, adrenal glands and reproductive organs. It also plays a role in growth, reproduction, water balance and breastfeeding.
👣 Reflexology point:
Found on the tip of the big toe.
💚 Potential benefits:
Gentle stimulation may encourage relaxation, improve circulation and support the body’s natural self-regulating processes.
🌙 2️⃣ Pineal Gland — Your Sleep Clock
Location: Deep within the brain
What it does:
Produces melatonin, helping regulate your circadian rhythm (sleep-wake cycle).
👣 Reflexology point:
Centre of the big toe.
💚 Potential benefits:
Many people report deeper relaxation and improved sleep quality following reflexology, although more research is needed.
🦋 3️⃣ Thyroid & Parathyroid Glands
Location: Front of the neck
What they do:
🦋 Thyroid
• Controls metabolism
• Regulates body temperature
• Supports heart function
• Influences energy production
🦴 Parathyroids
• Maintain healthy calcium levels
• Support strong bones
• Assist muscle and nerve function
👣 Reflexology point:
Base of the big toe.
💚 Potential benefits:
Reflexology may help reduce stress and improve circulation, which may support overall wellness alongside medical treatment.
🛡 4️⃣ Thymus
Location: Behind the breastbone
What it does:
The thymus helps mature T-lymphocytes (T-cells), essential immune cells that protect your body from infection. It is especially active during childhood.
👣 Reflexology point:
Just beneath the ball of the foot.
💚 Potential benefits:
Gentle stimulation may promote relaxation and support healthy immune function through stress reduction.
⚡ 5️⃣ Adrenal Glands — Your Stress Responders
Location: Sitting on top of each kidney
What they produce:
• Cortisol
• Adrenaline
• Noradrenaline
• Aldosterone
These hormones regulate:
✔ Blood pressure
✔ Stress response
✔ Electrolyte balance
✔ Energy production
👣 Reflexology point:
Inner arch of each foot.
💚 Potential benefits:
This is one of the most requested reflexology areas, as many clients find treatment deeply calming during periods of chronic stress.
🍬 6️⃣ Pancreas
Location: Behind the stomach
What it does:
Produces insulin and glucagon to help maintain healthy blood glucose levels.
👣 Reflexology point:
Primarily on the left foot beneath the ball of the foot.
💚 Potential benefits:
Reflexology should never replace diabetes treatment but may contribute to relaxation and overall wellness as part of a healthy lifestyle.
🌸 7️⃣ Ovaries / Te**es
Location:
Pelvis (ovaries)
Sc***um (te**es)
What they produce:
🌸 Estrogen
🌸 Progesterone
💙 Testosterone
These hormones influence:
• Fertility
• Menstrual cycles
• Libido
• Muscle mass
• Bone density
• Mood
👣 Reflexology point:
Outer heel region.
💚 Potential benefits:
Many people choose reflexology as a supportive therapy during hormonal transitions such as menstruation, menopause or fertility journeys.
🌿 The Science So Far
Current research suggests reflexology may:
✅ Reduce stress and anxiety
✅ Promote relaxation
✅ Improve perceived well-being
✅ Help improve sleep quality
✅ Lower sympathetic (“fight or flight”) activity
✅ Support healthy circulation
Scientists are still investigating exactly how reflexology works. Proposed mechanisms include nervous system modulation, changes in autonomic nervous system activity, improved blood flow and the release of endorphins.
There is currently no strong scientific evidence that reflexology directly changes hormone levels or treats endocrine diseases, but it may serve as a valuable complementary therapy that supports the body’s natural healing environment.
🌱 The Bottom Line
Your hormones don’t work in isolation—they communicate constantly with your nervous system, immune system and lymphatic system.
By encouraging deep relaxation and reducing stress, reflexology may help create an internal environment where your body can function more efficiently. While it should never replace medical treatment, many people find it to be a gentle, calming therapy that supports their overall health journey.
💚 Disclaimer: Reflexology is a complementary therapy and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent disease. Always consult your healthcare provider regarding hormonal disorders or any changes to your treatment plan.

The feet may be where reflexology begins, but they are rarely the whole story.
One of the things people often find so interesting about reflexology is that such a focused treatment can feel like it reaches much further.
Not because the feet are doing all the work on their own, but because the body works as one connected system.
When the nervous system begins to settle, other things can start to shift too. Breathing may soften. The mind may quieten. Digestion may feel less sluggish. Circulation may improve. Sleep may come a little easier. The whole person often feels the benefit, not just the feet on the couch.
That doesn’t mean reflexology is a cure-all, and it shouldn’t be presented as one. But it can be a powerful complementary therapy - one that gives the body a chance to slow down, regulate and respond in its own way.
That’s why a reflexology session may begin with the feet, but the deepest impact is often felt elsewhere. 👣

REFLEXOLOGY RESEARCH FRIDAY! In this randomized controlled trial, the participants in the study group underwent 20 minutes of foot reflexology for 10 days and cognitive function was evaluated before and after the intervention. "In this study, 10 days of foot reflexology improves cognitive function in healthy individuals. However, further randomized controlled trials with a larger sample size, extended follow-up, and more objective measures are warranted to substantiate the results of the study and explore the underlying mechanisms through which reflexology may influence cognitive function."
