There are some people who straight away will make you feel at ease, for whatever indescribable reason. These are the ones who let you be yourself. They make you feel cared about. There is something about their nature, a gesture, or a word that lets you feel at home. It’s when a person looks at you with honest, open kindness, and when you feel that they’re on your side.

This approach to others is known as maitri in Buddhist philosophy. A lot of our interactions come loaded with an agenda. Sometimes this is transactional, as in, ‘I’ll give you this if you give me that.’ And sometimes it’s purely egoistic, as in, ‘What can I get from this?’ or ‘How can this make me look good?’ Maitri is the opposite of this. Maitri translates as loving-kindness, and it’s when you interact with someone as a person worthy of care. In the Buddhist Pali Canon, maitri is compared to the love of a parent for their child. It’s the unconditional, no-strings-attached desire for somebody to do well.

At a very basic level, maitri is about civility. You don’t need to say thank you or hold the door open for somebody, but when you do so, you acknowledge that they are a person worthy of care. But at its most enlightened, maitri is about sharing in the joy of others and trying everything you can to make their life a good one. It’s believing that they deserve to be happy. Maitri is the smile, the wave, or the kind word just because it’s a nice thing to do. It’s about treating every interaction with warmth and friendliness. 08/06/2025
