Its long forked tail constantly bobs as it searches for insects and other small creatures among rocks and shallow water. Agile and fearless, it thrives in places where many other birds rarely venture.

On this day, 26th July 1935, a new era of travel began for the North East as Newcastle Airport – originally known as Woolsington Aerodrome – officially opened its doors.

Built for the princely sum of just £35,000 to replace the ageing Cramlington airfield, the original site was a far cry from the bustling international hub we know today. When the Secretary of State for Air, Sir Phillip Cunliffe-Lister, officially opened the facility, it consisted of little more than a single grass runway, a clubhouse, a hangar, and a fuel garage.

From those humble beginnings, it has grown exponentially. The original grass strip was eventually replaced by tarmac, and the addition of the Metro connection in 1991 firmly cemented its status as the region's main gateway to the world.

Today marks exactly 91 years since those very first flights took off from Woolsington, making it a huge anniversary for a vital piece of North East infrastructure.
