In 14 years as a beautician, I’ve carried out thousands of patch tests. In all that time, I’ve only had five positive reactions. During the last 8 years of being self-employed, I hadn’t seen a single reaction… until last week.

Considering the numbers, allergic reactions are rare. But all it takes is one client to remind you why patch testing is so important.

This reaction happened after a patch test for an eyebrow/lash tint. The client had previously had tints without any problems and also colours her hair regularly. Yet, for reasons we can’t always predict, she developed an allergic reaction.

With my client’s permission, I’m sharing her photo to help raise awareness of what an allergic reaction can look like. Reactions can be milder than this, or much more severe, including swelling, blistering, scabbing, and significant irritation.

Allergic reactions don’t usually settle on their own straight away—they often develop and worsen over the following hours or even days.

This is exactly why I take patch testing seriously. It’s not about ticking a box—it’s about protecting my clients’ health and safety.
