Deep Cleanse

After a day at the beach or pool, it’s essential to remove any salt, chlorine, or product build-up from your hair using Joico’s K-PAK Clarifying Shampoo, which gently yet effectively cleanses your hair while maintaining its natural moisture balance; follow with a deep conditioning treatment to keep your hair soft and manageable.

Before swimming, dampen your hair with clean water to minimise chlorine absorption, and consider using a pre-swim treatment to create a protective barrier against chlorine damage. Though not the most fashionable choice, wearing a well-fitting swim cap is highly effective at safeguarding your hair from chlorine exposure.

Trim Regularly

Regular trims are essential to maintaining healthy hair, especially during the summer when split ends can be more prevalent. Visit Anthony James Hair Salon for a trim every 6-8 weeks to keep your hair looking fresh and healthy. Our expert stylists will ensure your hair is in top condition all summer long.

Use a Wide-Tooth Comb

Wet hair is more susceptible to breakage, so be gentle when detangling after a swim or shower. Use a wide-tooth comb to gently remove knots and tangles without causing damage. Start at the ends and work your way up to the roots to minimise stress on your hair.

Hair Care Essentials for Your Holiday Getaway at Anthony James Hair Salon in Halifax

Summer holidays are a time for fun in the sun, but all that exposure to sun, sea, and sand can take a toll on your hair. At Anthony James Hair Salon, we understand the importance of keeping your hair healthy and vibrant during the summer months. With our expert tips and Joico products, you can ensure your hair stays stunning all summer long. Here are our top tips for healthy holiday hair:

Hydrate Your Hair

Summer heat can strip your hair of moisture, leaving it dry and brittle. To keep your hair hydrated, use Joico’s Moisture Recovery Shampoo and Conditioner. These products are specially formulated to replenish lost moisture and restore elasticity.

For an extra boost, incorporate Joico’s K-PAK Intense Hydrator into your routine once a week to deeply condition and revitalise your locks.

Protect from UV Rays

Just like your skin, your hair needs protection from the sun’s harmful UV rays. Joico’s Defy Damage Protective Shield is perfect for this. Apply it before heading out into the sun to shield your hair from UV damage and keep it looking vibrant and healthy.

This product also protects against environmental pollutants, making it a must-have for your summer hair care arsenal.

Minimise Heat Styling

Summer is the perfect time to embrace your natural hair texture. Minimise the use of heat styling tools to prevent additional dryness and damage. If you must use heat, always apply Joico’s Heat Hero Glossing Thermal Protector to protect your hair from temperatures up to 450°F (232°C). This will help maintain your hair’s health and shine.

Combat Frizz

Humidity can be a nightmare for frizz-prone hair. To keep frizz at bay, use Joico’s Zero Heat Air Dry Styling Crème. This lightweight crème enhances your hair’s natural texture while reducing frizz and adding a touch of polish. Simply apply to damp hair and let it air dry for effortless summer styles.

As summer rolls in, many of us are quick to prepare our skin for the sun, but what about our hair? The combination of sunshine, saltwater, and chlorine can take a real toll, leaving hair feeling dry, faded, and frizzy. At Anthony James Hair Salon in Halifax, we’re here to help you enjoy healthy summer hair that lasts all season and beyond.

In warmer weather, we tend to wash our hair more often—whether it’s to rinse out sweat, SPF, or that dip in the pool. But over-washing, especially with harsh products, can strip the hair of its natural moisture. Instead, choose a gentle, professional shampoo that cleans without drying.

If your scalp feels congested, a clarifying wash or exfoliating treatment can help remove product build-up and refresh your roots.

UV rays don’t just affect your skin - they can also cause your hair colour to fade. If you’ve recently had your colour refreshed, it’s worth adding a few extra steps to your routine. Use a colour-safe shampoo and conditioner, treat your hair to a weekly hydrating mask, and try to rinse with cool water where possible - it helps seal the cuticle and lock in colour.

Humidity is a big cause of frizz, and summer brings it in abundance. If your hair starts to misbehave as soon as the temperature rises, we’ve got you covered. Our team at Anthony James can recommend moisture infusing treatments and frizz-fighting products designed to hydrate and calm unruly hair, leaving it soft, sleek, and manageable - no matter the weather.

We all love a swim, but pool chemicals and sea salt can be hard on your hair. To minimise the impact, rinse your hair with clean water before swimming - this helps limit how much chlorine or salt your hair absorbs. A leave-in conditioner can also create a barrier. If your hair’s feeling dry after a holiday, book in for a professional conditioning treatment to bring it back to life.

Sun exposure can dry out your strands and leave them vulnerable to breakage. One of our go-to products for summer is the Joico Defy Damage Protective Shield - a lightweight leave-in that offers both heat protection and defence against UV rays. It’s perfect for daily use and helps keep your hair smooth, shiny, and prot

Should you wash your hair less in summer?

The short answer is: it depends.

Last week was one of the hardest weeks we have had in the salon.
Not because of our clients but the weather.
It reached over 30 degrees and became unbearable.
Because of the heat and sweating you may have been washing your hair more, a couple of clients asked if it’s a good idea.
The short answer is: it depends on your hair — not the weather.
If your hair is dry, colour-treated, or curly, then yes, backing off on washing in hot weather can help. Sun, UV exposure, humidity, and swimming all strip moisture. Add shampoo to that mix and your hair can end up rough, frizzy, and more prone to breakage. Fewer washes means more of your scalp’s natural oils get to do their job.
But here’s where people go wrong.
“Wash less in summer” gets repeated like it’s a universal rule. It isn’t. Hot weather also means more sweat, more sunscreen, more pollen, and more buildup sitting on your scalp. Leave that too long and you’ll end up with itchiness, flaking, or irritation — none of which is what you’re after.
So the rule we actually follow?
Wash based on how your scalp feels — not the weather. If your hair feels dry, go longer between washes. If your scalp feels sweaty or uncomfortable, wash it.
And if you are washing frequently, two easy wins: swap to a gentle shampoo and use lukewarm water instead of hot. Hot water in hot weather is one of the most common reasons hair ends up drier than it needs to be.
If you’re not sure what’s right for your hair specifically, that’s exactly the kind of thing we talk through at your appointment.
I know we want hot weather in summer, but that was too much.(In my opinion)
I think it is going back to normal this week.
Until next week
Garry
