There’s no denying these curls are INCREDIBLE. But the fun thing about hair is changing it up, and I did exactly that for .curls 🩷

Using the whole keratin alpha sleek range, which is their new products for frizzy, unruly hair

This range is incredible! They also have a professional smoothing treatment that you can use every third wash, then this mask is to be used in between!

A huge thankyou to for all your help with this one 💜

Clean beauty refers to products marketed as being free from “toxic” or harmful ingredients. However, the challenge with this concept is almost any ingredient can be harmful depending on the amount used, how often it’s applied, and the way it interacts within a formula.

For example, drinking a glass of water is healthy, but consuming 100 litres at once would be dangerous. The same principle applies to cosmetic ingredients, safety is determined by dosage, frequency of use, method of application, and the combination of ingredients within the formulation.

Currently, there are no regulations or government standards that clearly define what qualifies as “clean beauty” versus what does not. Because of this, the term is often used as a marketing strategy rather than a scientifically regulated category.

Many apps that encourage consumers to avoid certain products are also not always scientifically reliable. Some are not developed by cosmetic scientists, and in some cases, their ingredient ratings can even be edited by users.

Product formulators and toxicologists assess ingredients based on safety data. They consider how an ingredient is used, the concentration that is safe, how frequently the product will be applied, and how ingredients interact with one another within a formula. Cosmetic formulation is designed to ensure products remain effective while minimising the risk of harm or irritation.

Another common argument within clean beauty is that natural ingredients are automatically safer or less toxic. However, this is not always the case. Essential oils, for example, are natural ingredients but are often far more irritating to the skin and more likely to cause sensitivity than many silicone-based emollients.

Ultimately, product safety is not determined by picking one ingredient off the back of the list and marking it as dangerous. The context really matters.
