Being named a finalist for Best Boutique Salon means so much to me because it reflects everything MB Garden Room was created to be.

For me, a boutique salon is about so much more than a beautiful space. It's about creating an experience that feels calm, personal and completely centred around you.

I designed MB Garden Room to be a quiet, one-to-one studio where there's time to listen, time to think, and time to create. Every appointment is tailored to the individual, allowing me to focus on precision cutting, bespoke colour and the finer details that make all the difference.

The peaceful environment isn't just something that's nice to have – it's an important part of how I work. It allows me to concentrate fully on my craft while giving my clients the chance to relax, switch off and enjoy a little time for themselves.

Every decision I've made, from the layout of the salon to the way I work with each client, has been intentional. My aim has always been to create a space where people leave not only loving their hair, but feeling refreshed too.

People often ask me what products I actually use myself, so I thought I'd give you a little look inside my holiday hair bag.

I like to keep things simple when I'm away. My priority isn't spending ages styling my hair - it's keeping it hydrated and protected from the sun, sea and swimming pool so it still feels healthy when I get home.

Summer sunshine is wonderful, but it can leave your hair feeling dry, frizzy and harder to manage. Heat, UV rays and even swimming can all strip moisture from the hair, making colour fade more quickly and leaving the hair looking dull.

One question I'm often asked is, "Should I wash my hair before my appointment?"

The simple answer is... no, there's no need.

Whether you're coming in for a haircut or a colour, just arrive with your hair as you would normally wear it. I'll take care of everything from there, including washing and preparing your hair using professional products.

If you're having a colour service, it's actually better not to shampoo your hair immediately before your appointment. Your scalp's natural oils help create a protective barrier, making the service more comfortable.

The only exception is if you've used a lot of root touch-up spray or temporary colour powders. These can coat the hair and affect the colour result, so it's best to avoid them before your appointment.

So, no need to worry about washing your hair beforehand - just come as you are, relax, and leave the rest to me.

One of the biggest things I focus on when teaching precision cutting is elevation.

You can have the cleanest sectioning in the world, but if your elevation changes, so will the result.

Lift the hair too high and you risk removing too much weight. Keep it too low and the shape can become heavy and bulky. Every angle you choose has a purpose.

That's why I encourage my students to understand the why before they pick up the scissors. When you know what you're trying to achieve, your cutting becomes more consistent, more confident and much easier to repeat behind the chair.

Precision cutting isn't about following a formula. It's about understanding the principles so you can make the right decisions for every client who sits in your chair.
