One thing that really stood out to me from yesterday’s wedding was that the newly married couple have decided to live independently rather than in a joint family. It reminded me of something I think we need to talk about more.

Living together and learning to adopt, compromise and love each other is, indeed, a beautiful concept of family life. There are countless examples of families in a joint household where everyone lives a prosperous and happy life.

Equally though, there are many women who wish to live separately, and they’re often accused of “breaking” the family.

Looking after each other’s families and being considerate is a duty of both the husband and wife. But there is no Islamic obligation for a wife to live with her in-laws if she is not willing to, for any reason, including privacy.

Unfortunately, what isn’t an Islamic obligation has often become a cultural expectation, leading women to be labelled as selfish, rebellious or “home breakers.” Wanting a different living arrangement doesn’t mean a woman is disrespectful, it simply means she’s choosing the environment she believes is healthiest for her marriage and family.

May Allah ﷻ make us among those who spread love, show compassion, and fulfil the rights of our spouses and families. Ameen 🤍

If I could tell every young Muslim girl one thing, it would be this: don’t let unanswered questions make you distance yourself from Islam. 🤍

I had questions too. Some rulings felt difficult to understand, and without knowledge, they can seem unfair. But seeking authentic Islamic knowledge completely changed my perspective.

I’m sharing this because I want every young Muslimah to realise how deeply Allah ﷻ loves and honours you. Hold tightly onto your imaan, ask questions, seek knowledge, and never let culture be mistaken for Islam.

May Allah ﷻ increase us all in knowledge, understanding and steadfastness. Ameen. 🤍
