Established in 2014, DKUK is the original hair salon that got rid of mirrors, offering haircuts and colour in front of art. DKUK is for everyone; you can come in for a haircut, or just to see the exhibition. Open to all hair types and lengths, we charge gender neutral pricing based on time and stylists’ experience. We proudly stock vegan hair care range Pureology, Davines’ sustainable styling products, Philip Kingsley’s award-winning scalp treatments and are the only Peckham stockist of leading afro hair brand Design Essentials. Realised by artist/hairdresser Daniel Kelly, DKUK is a platform for making contemporary art and the discussion around it more commonplace and accessible. Staging six exhibitions and various events a year in the welcoming setting of a bustling hair salon, DKUK presents itself as a new model for creative practices and artistic economies to support each other. This includes commissioning new art works and providing full training for artists to become hairdressers. The co-existence of hairdressing and art means at DKUK we look after peoples’ heads – inside and out.
An itchy, flaky scalp usually isn’t dryness. Which is why the rich mask you have been putting on it hasn’t fixed anything.
Flaking is mostly driven by a yeast called Malassezia. It lives on every scalp and feeds on the oils there. When it overgrows, the scalp becomes irritated, and that irritation is what makes the skin shed.
The Philip Kingsley Flaky Scalp range is back with us. We stocked it for years, tried other brands in between, and came back to it. The active ingredient is piroctone olamine, which brings the yeast back down to normal levels rather than just clearing the flakes off the top.
In the salon it runs in four parts. The mask goes onto a damp scalp in 3cm partings and stays for 10 to 20 minutes. Then a rinse. Then two shampoos, the first massaged in for a full minute to lift what the mask has loosened. Then the toner, worked into the scalp and left in.
If your scalp is sore or broken, that one is for your GP rather than us.

Thank you to everyone who came to our private view on Sunday.
It was busy and a lot of fun. So many artists came through the door. We made some new friends and caught up with old ones.
One moment stayed with us. Three generations of Camberwell graduates, stood together in the salon, talking. That was a lovely thing to watch.

The title comes from a phrase engraved in Leo Costelloe’s work. It recalls The Smashing Pumpkins’ 1995 song “Bullet with Butterfly Wings”.
The exhibition looks at girlhood as something made, sold and consumed. It asks how femininity is performed through objects, images, rituals and work. And how those expectations follow us into adult life.
With the 90s and early 00s back in fashion, the artists look at girlie pop culture, teenage shopping, the female gaze and the habit of picking ourselves apart. The show asks what happens when the sweet image of the young girl is turned inside out, reclaimed or pushed back against.
The salon is part of the idea. It is a room where people come to make and remake how they see themselves.
