Every night, a little boy left one side of his bed empty and whispered, “Goodnight, Mommy.” His grandmother thought it was his way of coping after losing her. One night, she heard him crying and entered his room. He was holding his mother’s old sweater tightly against his chest. “Grandma, can you wash this for me?” he asked. “Of course, sweetheart.” Suddenly, he pulled it back and screamed, “No! Don’t!” His grandmother froze. The boy buried his face in the sweater and whispered through his tears, “It still smells like Mommy. If you wash it, I’ll lose the last thing that feels like she’s still here.” His grandmother sat beside him and cried until morning. The next day, she placed the sweater carefully inside a box. Years later, he still opens it whenever life becomes too heavy and whispers, “Mom, I’m trying my best.”
