Specialist in Electrolysis hair removal, advanced cosmetic procedures and IPL Laser treatments

I have been a qualified electrologist for over 30years, practicing in West London and specialising in treating women with hair growth problems arising from hormonal disorders and in particular Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. I have over 20 years of experience working within the NHS and currently still consult at St.Mary's Hospital, Paddington. I offer private treatments at Atherton Cox, New Cavendish S

PCOS isn’t just about periods or fertility. It’s a complex metabolic and hormonal condition, and for many women, insulin resistance sits right at the heart of it.

So where do GLP-1 medications fit in?

The evidence is becoming increasingly encouraging. Studies show that GLP-1 receptor agonists can help women with PCOS lose weight, improve insulin sensitivity, reduce waist circumference, improve cholesterol and blood sugar, and in some cases restore more regular ovulation and menstrual cycles. Some women also see improvements in androgen-related symptoms, although we still need more high-quality research to know exactly how much of this is due to weight loss versus direct effects on the ovaries and metabolism.

Importantly, they’re not currently recommended as a first-line treatment for everyone with PCOS.

The international PCOS guidelines say GLP-1 medications can be considered for adults with PCOS who have higher body weight, alongside lifestyle support, following the same principles used in the general population. They should be prescribed after an individual discussion about benefits, side effects, the likelihood of long-term treatment, and the fact that weight regain is common if they’re stopped. Effective contraception is also recommended while taking them, as we don’t yet have enough safety data in pregnancy.

So yes, GLP-1s are an exciting new option for some women with PCOS—but they’re not a cure, they’re not suitable for everyone, and they’re just one part of a much bigger treatment plan.

As always, speak to your healthcare professional about what’s right for you.

A long overdue step forward. With lots of hard work and campaigning things are finally changing. Thanks to organisations such as Verity - PMOS UK for their input. Patients previously diagnosed with PCOS,should ask their GP to update medical records and instigate annual reviews.
