Thirty years ago today, I was working on the L’Oréal fragrance counter in Boots Manchester when the city changed forever.
We were used to IRA threats and had been evacuated many times before. That Saturday felt no different at first.
I remember police putting tape across the front of the store and asking me to help evacuate. We walked down Cross Street and gathered in Albert Square in the blazing sunshine.
Then, suddenly, police charged down the street telling us to get back.
At 11:17am, the bomb exploded.
The force of it travelled through your body. We watched a mushroom cloud rise over the city as people stood in shock. Afterwards, we were herded through different parts of Manchester trying to find our way home.
This morning, exactly 30 years later at 11:17am, I took this photograph of the postbox that survived the blast and still stands today.
Manchester was devastated that day, but it rebuilt. For those of us who were there, some memories remain as vivid as ever.
