Before it was a trend, it was culture🖤
This Black History Month, we’re taking some time to look at the history behind our industry, recognise the influence Black culture has had on modern nail art and, most importantly, give credit where it’s due.
This is Part 1: Before It Was a Trend.
And we’re creating this series collaboratively with Mika | Nail Art Tutorials | Product Videos | Content Creator because we don’t want to tell these stories without including the voices and perspectives of the community we’re celebrating🖤
So many of the nail looks we scroll past every day have histories that stretch much further back than our Instagram and TikTok feeds.
For decades, Black women have used nails as a form of creativity, identity and self-expression, embracing long acrylics, intricate artwork, airbrushing, gems and embellishments – often at a time when those same looks were stereotyped rather than celebrated.
From Donyale Luna, Diana Ross, Donna Summer and Millie Jackson to the generations that followed.
They weren’t always trend. A reminder that nail art is ART. And the artists behind it deserve credit.
The influence is still everywhere. They’re not new.
Before it was a trend, it was culture.
