Problems are not always coming from where you first think đ What makes this interesting is that horses carrying tension through the iliocostalis often do not just present as âback painâ. Instead, owners and riders notice things like lack of bend, stiffness through transitions, a horse that struggles to lift through the thoracic sling, or one that feels tight and possibly guarded through the ribcage.
Because this muscle sits closely linked with the ribs and breathing mechanics, tension here can also influence how freely the horse moves through the whole upper body. This is why we teach students to look beyond isolated sore spots and instead assess the horse as one connected system â¨

They donât always look lame đ
Your horseâs spine works hard every single second they move. What we often donât realise is that it is constantly balancing, stabilising, absorbing force and helping transfer power from the hindquarters through the whole body!
Sadly, horses often become uncomfortable through the spinal muscles long before they become actually lame. Sometimes it simply shows as them becoming less willing, less soft through the back, struggling to stand comfortably for mounting, dipping away from grooming, or not moving quite as freely as they used to. This is why we are such advocates for massage and bodywork as part of the all important maintenance team for our horses. And yes.. even our field ornaments can become stuck in tension too!
We help you understanding these issues better every month on our portal which is available to everyone https://woldsequinemassage.co.uk/program/monthly-cpd

5 Things Owners Can Do Between Bodywork Visits That Make a Big Difference Horses are incredibly good at adapting. They compensate, adjust, and keep working long before they show obvious signs that something feels uncomfortable. That is why bodywork appointments are often about far more than simply âfixingâ a problem. They are part of a much bigger picture of supportin...
