I used to think that becoming a better nail technician meant learning more techniques, buying better products and following the same routine until I got it right.

And when something didn’t work?

I questioned the product. Then my technique. Sometimes even whether I was good enough at my job.

But I wasn’t asking the most important question.

Why wasn’t it working?

Why did one client’s nails last beautifully while another experienced lifting?

Why did the same structure work on one nail but not another?

It took me time to understand that knowing how to perform a technique and understanding when, why and how to adapt it are two very different things.

That realisation changed how I approached my work.

And today, it’s at the centre of how I teach at Raisa Beauty Academy.

I work with qualified nail technicians who already have the basic knowledge but want to understand their work more deeply, identify what’s going wrong and make informed technical decisions.

Because sometimes the next step in your education isn’t learning something new.

It’s finally understanding what you’ve already learned.

I’m looking for a model to attend a practical training session at Raisa Beauty Academy, where my student will be performing a builder gel manicure under my supervision.

As this is a training session, please be comfortable with the treatment taking longer than a regular salon appointment. I will be present throughout to guide and supervise my student.

I don’t think most nail techs struggle because they’re not talented enough.
I think they struggle because they expect themselves to be good at something they are still learning.
And when it doesn’t go right, it becomes personal.
Maybe I’m not good enough.
Maybe everyone else gets it except me.
Maybe I’m just not made for this.
But a set that didn’t work isn’t proof that you can’t do nails.
It’s information.
Something in your prep, product control, structure, technique or decision-making needs more understanding.
That’s very different from I’m not talented.
I’ve never believed that becoming a good nail technician is about having some special gift in your hands.
Your hands learn through repetition.
Your eye develops through experience.
And your confidence comes from understanding why you’re doing what you’re doing — not from never making mistakes.
So if you’re in that stage where you’re questioning yourself, don’t ask:
Am I talented enough?
Ask:
What don’t I understand yet?
That question will take you much further.

Lifting used to make me question everything.

My prep.
My products.
My technique.
Sometimes even whether I was good enough.

So I did what a lot of nail techs do when something isn’t working: I searched for another product, another method, another tutorial.

But the real change came when I stopped asking:

“Which product should I try next?”

…and started asking:

“Why is this happening?”

Where is the lifting?
What does this natural nail need?
Was the issue prep, structure, application, product choice, aftercare — or a combination?

That shift changed the way I work completely.

Because confidence doesn’t come from never having problems.

It comes from knowing how to analyse what you’re seeing, work through the possibilities and make a decision based on the nail in front of you.

And that is exactly what I want my students to learn too.

Not how to copy my set.

How to understand their own.

I nearly quit doing nails because of lifting.

Not because I didn’t care enough.
Not because I wasn’t trying hard enough.
And not because I needed to buy another product.

I was doing what I had been taught: the same prep, the same products, the same technique — and expecting it to work the same way on every client.

When it didn’t, I assumed the problem was me.

The biggest shift came when I stopped asking, “What am I doing wrong?” and started asking, “Why is this happening on this client?”

Because lifting isn’t one problem with one solution.

The natural nail in front of you matters. Its flexibility, condition, moisture level, previous damage, the client’s lifestyle, your preparation, your structure, your product choice — they all give you information.

That is the way I want my students to learn too.

Not memorising a sequence and hoping it works.

Understanding what they’re seeing, making a decision, and knowing what to investigate when the result isn’t what they expected.
