For some children, especially those with sensory needs, the combination of heat, suncream and hair can be a lot to cope with. The shop can get quite warm, and I’d much rather your little ones have a calm, comfortable experience than feel overwhelmed or upset.

If you feel your child would cope better on a cooler day, please don’t worry about moving your appointment,, I completely understand 💙

Their comfort comes first, and I’ll always do my best to make haircuts a positive experience ☺️

Ethan’s Haircut Journey 💙✂️

When Ethan first came to me, he was absolutely terrified of having his hair cut after a bad experience elsewhere. At the beginning he wouldn’t let me touch him at all, and even being in the shop was a big thing for him.

For the first 6 months, he came in every week just to get used to me and the salon environment. We slowly started managing tiny little sections at a time, always stopping before he’d had enough. There were plenty of times he left with some very random cuts 😅 but every visit was progress.

About a year ago, I managed to do half a haircut sat on the floor with him while he hoovered up every single bit of hair as I cut it 😂

Fast forward to now… and this is his THIRD full haircut sat happily in the car 🙌🏻🚗

He still won’t wear the gown, but that’s okay — because the progress he’s made is huge ❤️

I know how stressful haircuts can be for some parents, especially when little ones are upset or frightened, but patience really does pay off. Sometimes it’s not about getting the perfect haircut straight away, it’s about building trust, making them feel safe, and taking things at their pace 💈✨

I’ve been noticing a big increase in appointments with children who struggle with having their haircut, so I thought it might be helpful to share a few tips that can make the experience feel a little easier and less overwhelming for both children and parents.

My aim is always to make every visit to the shop as calm, comfortable, and positive as possible. A little preparation beforehand can make a huge difference, so hopefully these tips help make future appointments a smoother experience for everyone ✂️

Tips for Helping Children Enjoy Their Haircut

Bring a clean top -
Bringing a fresh top for your child to change into after their haircut can really help. Loose hair can feel itchy and uncomfortable, and changing clothes afterwards often makes the rest of their day much easier and helps alleviate the association with haircuts the next time they have an appointment.

Manage expectations -
Please don’t expect a perfect haircut, especially if it’s your child’s first visit or if they’re feeling unsure. Sometimes the main goal of the first appointment is simply getting them familiar with the shop, the chair, and the experience itself.

Prepare them at home -
Talking about the haircut beforehand can help set expectations. Brushing or combing their hair at home lets them get used to the sensation and makes the process feel less unfamiliar.

Patience is important -
Haircuts take time and cooperation. While I have plenty of patience, nervous children often don’t. I’ll always do my best to achieve a tidy result, but a very sharp finish isn’t always possible if a child is unsettled or needs frequent breaks.

Bring comfort items -
Favourite toys, books, or a tablet can be a big help. Familiar items often provide comfort and distraction, helping your child feel more relaxed in the chair.

Be open to multiple visits -
Sometimes it takes more than one visit to complete a full haircut. If the first appointment ends with your child leaving happy and tear-free, that’s a positive step forward. Things usually get easier and smoother with each visit.

Children are still learning how to understand and communicate what’s bothering them. With patience, preparation, and support, haircuts can become a much more comfortable experience for everyone involved ☺️
