If you’ve been told “you’ll grow out of it” and you’re still breaking out in your thirties, forties or beyond, you’re not imagining things, and you haven’t done anything wrong. Adult acne is genuinely one of the most common concerns we see in clinic, and it behaves differently to teenage acne from the ground up.

Teenage acne tends to spread across the forehead, nose and cheeks, driven by the oil surge of puberty. Adult acne is usually concentrated along the jawline and chin, presents as deeper, more tender lesions, and flares in a cycle rather than staying constant, which is a strong clue that hormones (androgens, PCOS, perimenopause, cortisol from stress) are behind it, not just “oily skin.”

This is exactly why the harsh, oil-stripping products marketed for teenage acne so often make adult skin worse. Adult skin is thinner, more barrier-fragile, and slower to recover, so stripping it further tends to trigger more inflammation and more breakouts, not less.
