Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) has opened many doors for me in my practice, and in my body, in my visions, and in my understanding of my place here on this earth.

I found this wisened beauty half way up a mountain clinging to inhospitable ground. All the other hawthorns in the valley were in fruit, but this being had none. I sat with her for some time, and as hawthorn often does I felt an opening to a well of grief within me which flowed and cleansed and connected me in body and spirit to this land.

The land and the plant beings feel grief too, at what is being done to us all by the forces of empire and destruction. It is in our coming together as beings of nature that will see an end to these extractive practices of domination.

The power of nature will always overcome.

The beautiful Rowan tree, or Mountain Ash. A tree who holds their berries until the dark days of winter, bringing flashes of hope at life’s return. A quickening tree, bringing life and light to the eyes, to the light within, to the life in the fertile tomb of darkness, and awakening the edges.

The Rowan has been held in high regard as a tree of magic and protection since before wisdom was conflated with “witchcraft” and demonised in the battle between church, state, and the living people of the living land. The battle continues, as we try to wrench ourselves free from the clutches of destruction and severance, and remember our natural souls, in resonance with nature, as nature.
