There’s been a huge rise in children and young teens wanting acrylic and gel nails, but it’s important to understand the potential risks before saying yes.

Children under 16 have nails that are still developing. Their nail plates are generally thinner and more delicate than an adult’s, making them more vulnerable to damage.

Some of the risks include:
• Nail thinning and weakening from repeated application and removal.
• Allergic reactions to nail products, particularly acrylates. Once an allergy develops, it can be lifelong and may affect future medical and dental treatments that use similar materials.
• Increased risk of infection if the nail or surrounding skin is damaged.
• Damage caused by picking, peeling or forcefully removing gel or acrylic enhancements.
• Longer, artificial nails can also make it harder to keep hands clean and may be impractical for sports and other activities potentially resulting in trauma, injury and permanent damage.

While beautifully styled nails can be fun, children’s natural nails are healthiest when they’re allowed to grow and develop without enhancements.

If your child enjoys having their nails done, consider safer alternatives such as regular nail polish, nail art on natural nails, or special occasion manicures that don’t require gel or acrylic products.

As nail professionals, our role isn’t just to create beautiful nails, it’s also to educate, protect nail health, and put our clients’ wellbeing first.

Before my students ever work on a real client, they first have to learn control, precision and patience. 🥚👋

My students are practicing gel removal using an electric (E-file)... on eggs, then on the practice hand, then on themselves before ever working on a real client, this teaches them control of the file.

The goal is to remove the gel without damaging the brown shell, just like protecting the natural nail when working on real clients nails.
This exercise helps build control, correct pressure, and boosts their confidence with the e-file before working on actual clients.
