We’re looking for self-employed hairdressers to join Rebel Rebel when we move to our new salon at Verve in North Watford this September.

We’ve outgrown our current space, but we’re taking everything we love about Rebel Rebel with us.

It’s a genuinely lovely place to work. The salon is relaxed, everyone is friendly and supportive, and you can enjoy having other hairdressers around you while still running your own business in your own way.

Our new space will give us more room to work, more space around each section and the opportunity to welcome a few more independent stylists, while keeping the same atmosphere that has made Rebel Rebel work so well.

There is lots of information on our website about our chair rental, what is included and how everything works. But choosing where you work is personal, so we’re always happy to have a confidential chat, answer any questions or invite you in for a coffee and a look around.

Hi there, we’re Rebel Rebel Hair Studio in Watford, a dedicated coworking salon for freelance hairdressers who want more than just a chair to rent.

We’re about to relocate to a bigger space in North Watford, which means we’ll also be looking for new independent hairdressers to join us.

Whether you’re new to freelancing and would like some guidance, or you already have an established client base and are looking for the right salon space to move into, we’ve got you.

Here are five of the many things we offer to help you grow your business and enjoy working as an independent hairdresser.

We can give you guidance when you’re setting up your independent hairdressing business.

I know how daunting it can feel at the beginning when you don’t know where to start. We have a lot of experience working independently and, although every decision about your business is completely up to you, we can share what has worked for us.

That might mean pointing you towards a good accountant, recommending courses that could help you develop your skills and grow your business, or simply sitting down with you for some one-to-one guidance so you don’t feel like you’re figuring everything out alone.

We can give you your own dedicated page on the Rebel Rebel Hair Studio website, which you can link to from your social media.

Your page can include an image gallery showing some of your best work, a bio explaining who you are and the type of hair you love to create, your price list and a direct link to your booking system.

We can also work with you on collaborative blog posts. These are a great way to drive more traffic to your page, show your knowledge and help establish you as a local hairdressing expert, so new clients can find you.

I WAS EMPLOYED FOR 15 YEARS

Before I became an independent hairdresser, I was employed for my whole career, the last 10 years with the same company.

Unfortunately, at the age of 30, I became very sick…

I WAS OFF WORK FOR OVER A YEAR AND A HALF

I had bone marrow failure that resulted in needing a transplant. I was too sick to get out of bed most days.

I was lucky enough to find a donor and had my transplant about 9 months after I was diagnosed…

WHEN I WAS WELL ENOUGH, I RETURNED TO WORK

I had lived in isolation for the last year and a half, and returning to work was a big deal.

I started with 5 hours a week on a Thursday evening when the salon was quieter.

I wanted to message my old clients to tell them I was back, but I was told…

I COULD ONLY MESSAGE CLIENTS THAT HADN’T BEEN IN SINCE I WAS OFF

So I did, but I posted on social media (Facebook at the time) about how happy I was to be well enough to return to work.

Lots of my old clients saw it and reached out, asking to book appointments as they had been told by the person doing their hair that “they had no idea when I would be returning to work.” (Even though I was already back in the salon)

I also noticed that not one of my old clients was booked in when I was working.

I WAS GETTING PAID LESS THAN I WOULD FOR DOING ONE HAIRCUT PRIVATELY

I get that businesses need to make a profit, but in the commission/target-based salon, I went back to the minimum wage for my 5 hours a week.

I realised that if I did one haircut at home, I would earn more, so I decided to leave and set up from home, which worked well for me at the time.

I was so happy that so many of my old clients found me and came back to me (I still do a lot for them now), but I missed other hairdressers.

I TRIED RENTING A CHAIR IN A FEW SALONS

I rented a chair to be around other hairdressers but never found exactly what I was looking for, so I decided to build my own space for hairdressers like me.

You might notice a few changes at Rebel Rebel over the next couple of months, starting with our new logo to go with our new space.

From 21 September, Rebel Rebel Hair Studio will be moving to a new location in Watford.

We’ve loved our original little studio, but we’ve outgrown it. We wanted to create something better, so we’ve decided to take the step into a larger premises that gives us everything we need to grow our coworking salon for independent hairdressers.

Don’t worry, we’ll be keeping the same Rebel Rebel vibe. Professional but chilled, with a relaxed atmosphere, great coffee and, of course, lots of plants.

The biggest difference will be the space. Each styling section will be much more spacious, our independent hairdressers will have somewhere comfortable to relax between appointments, and there will be a dedicated area for taking photos of their work.

We’re creating a studio that works better for the hairdressers based here and feels even better for the clients visiting them.

Oh, and possibly the most exciting change of all.

We’re going to have air conditioning.

You might be wondering why we’ve decided to leave our little studio.

The answer is actually quite simple. Since the day Rebel Rebel opened, our goal has always been to create the best possible environment for the independent hairdressers who work here and the clients who visit them.

As we’ve grown, we’ve realised we’ve outgrown the space. We wanted more room for our hairdressers to work comfortably, larger working sections, somewhere to switch off between clients, a dedicated area to photograph their work and, after a few very warm summers, air conditioning.

We also wanted a space that reflects what Rebel Rebel has become. A coworking salon where independent hairdressers can build successful businesses, support one another and give their clients the best possible experience.

This move gives us the opportunity to do exactly that, and we can’t wait to welcome everyone through the doors.

We’ve loved our time in our little studio. It’s been an amazing home for us, and thanks to all of your support we’ve simply outgrown the space. We’ve reached the point where we can’t create the studio we know it could become, so it feels like the right time for the next chapter.

Our new space is a little different. It’s based in an industrial area that’s been transformed into a creative hub for independent businesses like ours. The vision behind it is to bring together women-owned businesses that can support one another, share ideas and grow alongside each other. It felt like the perfect fit for Rebel Rebel.

We’re really looking forward to creating a beautiful new space and welcoming you to it.
