Why I Left the Deputy Head's Office for my Crystal Singing Bowls: Bringing Sound Meditation into Schools For more years than I care to admit, my working day started the same way: a 7.30am arrival (having been 'on' since 6am, checking emails), a to-do list already three pages long, and a school full of children walking in carrying whatever they'd woken up with: a row with a sibling, a sleepless night, a

Why Sound Meditation Might Be the Missing Piece in Teacher Wellbeing Teaching is one of the few professions where you're "on" every single minute of the working day. There's no pause button between lessons, no quiet moment to simply exhale.

Sound Meditation & Healthy Ageing: Why It's Worth Trying
Sound meditation, sometimes called a "sound bath," using instruments like singing bowls, chimes and ocean drums, is gaining real traction as a gentle, accessible wellbeing practice for older adults. Here's why it's worth a listen:
Eases stress, tension and low mood A widely cited 2016 study of 62 adults found that a single singing bowl meditation session significantly reduced tension, anger, fatigue and depressed mood, while increasing feelings of wellbeing [1][2].
Calms the body, not just the mind Several studies report drops in heart rate, blood pressure and breathing rate during and after sound sessions — signs the body is shifting out of "fight or flight" and into a more restful state [2][4].
Supports better sleep Many participants report improved sleep quality and reduced insomnia symptoms after regularly incorporating sound sessions into their routine [4].
May ease physical tension and pain Some studies and case reports note reduced muscle tension and pain following sound sessions, though researchers note more robust trials are still needed here [4][6].
May support memory and cognitive function In a randomised trial, older adults with memory concerns who practised a short daily chant-based sound meditation (Kirtan Kriya) for just 12 minutes a day showed measurable improvements in memory and cognitive performance over 3–6 months [5].
Accessible for all mobility levels Unlike some meditation styles, sound meditation requires no prior experience or "quiet mind" skill — it can be enjoyed lying on a mat, sitting in a chair, or even from a wheelchair, making it especially well suited to older adults [1].
Helps with the loneliness and grief that often come with ageing Chronic illness, grief and isolation are common stressors in later life and are linked to inflammation and conditions like arthritis and type 2 diabetes. Calming practices like sound meditation offer a gentle, low-risk way to help manage that stress response [1].
As with any complementary therapy, sound meditation works best alongside — not instead of — advice from your GP or healthcare team, especially if you're managing an existing health condition.

3 Breathwork Exercises You Can Do Anywhere
Feeling stressed, wired, or just need a reset? Your breath is the fastest tool you have: it’s free, always with you, and takes less than 5 minutes.
Here are three simple techniques to try:
1. Box Breathing (for focus & calm) Inhale for 4 counts → hold for 4 → exhale for 4 → hold for 4. Repeat for 4–5 rounds. This is a well-documented technique used by athletes and those in high-performance roles. It steadies the nervous system before high-pressure moments.
2. 4-7-8 Breathing (for winding down) Inhale through your nose for 4 counts, hold for 7, exhale slowly through your mouth for 8. Great before bed or anytime anxiety creeps in — the long exhale signals your body to relax.
3. Physiological Sigh (for quick stress relief) Two quick inhales through the nose (one big, one short top-off), then one long, slow exhale through the mouth. Do this 1–3 times. It’s one of the fastest ways to calm your body in real time. You might notice that it almost replicates the way we cry: it’s what your body automatically does while crying or sobbing. It is a built-in reflex that re-inflates tiny collapsed air sacs in the lungs to quickly offload carbon dioxide and calm your nervous system.
✨ Try one the next time you feel overwhelmed — even 60 seconds can shift how you feel.
