People often expect a sea salt bar to feel rough or scratchy on their skin. In reality, the chemistry does something completely unexpected.

When fine mineral sea salt dissolves into cold-process soap, it doesn't create big, airy bubbles.

Instead, it transforms the lather into something remarkably thick, creamy, and lotion-like.

It glides over the skin almost like a conditioning wash while the fine minerals give a very light, polishing feel — especially comforting on rough elbows, heels, or skin that feels a bit dull after a long week.

I blend mineral-rich sea salt into my superfatted base of extra virgin olive oil, avocado oil, and unrefined shea butter, finishing with grounding sandalwood, refreshing peppermint, or bright grapefruit.

Because of the salt density, these cure into exceptionally firm, long-lasting bars that won't soften easily on your shower dish.

When I first started studying traditional soap chemistry, one common industrial manufacturing practice genuinely surprised me.

During traditional soapmaking, the natural reaction between plant oils and lye creates a generous amount of glycerin — a humectant that draws moisture directly into your skin.

In large-scale commercial manufacturing, companies routinely extract and remove this natural glycerin. They sell it off separately for use in higher-priced moisturisers and body lotions, replacing it in the bar with synthetic detergents and artificial hardeners.

I do the exact opposite. Traditional cold-process soapmaking naturally retains every drop of plant-derived glycerin. On top of that, I deliberately "superfat" my recipes — leaving nourishing extra virgin olive oil, cold-pressed avocado oil, and shea butter unsaponified in the bar so it conditions your skin as you wash.

It’s a slower, traditional way of making soap that keeps the moisturising goodness where it belongs.

Every time I pour a fresh batch of Rita's Petals, I'm taken straight back to June afternoons in Italy as a child. During the festival of Santa Rita, rose petals were scattered along the procession paths, filling the warm air with a delicate, joyful perfume.

I created this bar to bring that same quiet, comforting feeling into an everyday shower ritual.

Many people worry that clay soaps will dry out delicate or easily unsettled skin, but French pink clay is wonderfully different.
