For reducing belly fat
Yoga is a form of exercise that originated in ancient India and is practised widely across the world today. Yoga not only enhances your physical strength but also contributes largely towards your mental health and spiritual growth.
Looking at the popularity of yoga, Honâble Prime Minister Narendra Modi suggested at the UN Assembly that yoga be given a special day as it is beneficial for everyone and making it a world event would help in spreading awareness about its benefits. So, on 21st June 2015, World Yoga Day was observed for the first time across the world and has since been celebrated annually.
Yoga not only keeps you fit but also has a lot of long-term benefits when you make it an integral part of your lifestyle. Some benefits of yoga include:
Better posture
Yoga helps in keeping the spine erect, enabling you to sit straight and not slouch. It also helps alleviate the stress on your spine, exerted through incorrect posture. Consistent practice of Yoga helps in keeping the spine strong and prevents fatigue.
Improved bone health
Many postures in yoga require you to lift your own weight which helps in making the bones stronger and helps ward off osteoporosis.
Increased blood flow
The inverted and twisting nature of Yoga poses wring out the venous blood from the internal organs and allow oxygenated blood to flow. This also boosts the haemoglobin and red blood cells count.
Improved heart health
When you practice Yoga regularly, you get your heart into the aerobic range. This not only lowers the risk of heart attack but also relieves depression.
Lowered blood pressure
The savasana (co**se pose) helps people with hypertension. This pose is said to be have resulted in great improvement in people with high blood pressure.
Improved balance
Yoga involves focusing on holding postures for extended periods of time. This helps in improving your body balance and developing muscle tone.
Relaxation and sleeping aid
Yoga can help you relieve the stress of modern life and helps you sleep deeper. Yoga encourages you to relax and slow your breath and to focus on the present. It shifts your focus from sympathetic nervous system to parasympathetic nervous system. Restorative asanas and meditation also encourage a turning inward of the senses, which relaxes the nervous system.
Improved lung health
Yoga draws attention to your breathing pattern and makes you aware of breathing correctly which filters the air, warms it and humidifies it removing the pollen and the dirt, supplying fresh oxygen into the lungs.
Reduced digestive problems
Yoga like any other physical exercise can ease constipation and lower the risk of colon cancer. The movements that Yoga involves, improve the transport of food and remove waste through the bowels. This helps in getting rid of the waste from the system more effectively.
Eases your pain
Yoga can ease your pain and help people who suffer from arthritis, back pain and other chronic conditions. When you relieve pain, youâre in a much better mood and are inclined to be more active.
Follow These 6 Tips for a Healthy Yoga Session
When you start, you may not be able to do every asana thatâs asked of you, it doesnât matter. If you donât really like the leader or other members in the class, it doesnât really matter. If you feel a little uncomfortable, it doesnât really matter. Youâre there for yourself and following these 6 coaching tips will guide you into, through, and past your inexperience, self-doubt or resistance.
1) Get Focused
Pay attention to every word your teacher says. This focused single idea will shift the focus away from you. If your initial strategy is to pay the utmost attention, it will also keep your mind off others who are in class and therefore, itâs less likely youâll be distracted.
By paying close attention to the directions and words of an experienced teacher, you will breathe deeply the breath of life and reap the single most important benefit of yoga for both the short and long term: intentional connection with your breath.
2) Follow The Rules
Follow the guidelines of the studio. Many yoga studioâs post their rules and regulations in a public place. Rules are posted to help everyone sharing a space cooperate with one another, when there are a variety of needs and norms that need to be met simultaneously. Rules and regulations help form a standard behavior that may not appeal to everyone, but aim to limit chaos and unbalanced inconvenience.
While the cosmic and essential philosophy of yoga may be a union with God and dissolution of all boundaries and borders, the people you meet will have boundaries and borders. It would be wise to respect them. Furthermore, be mindful of your own boundaries.
In any setting, all of us have a right to always â respectfully, yet firmly â speak and enforce our truth. If thereâs a sign somewhere in the yoga studio saying, âStaff Onlyâ, thatâs a boundary that must be respected. A yogi is mindful and respectful of all boundaries, both personal and corporate. This will engender good will for you and speak of your personal integrity.
3) Accept The Risks
Think of attending a class as an experiment that cannot go wrong. No matter what happens, if you are humble, you will learn something and learning is what helps us to grow. One of my professors taught us to trace the arc of the terrible this way. Think of something in yoga class that could go bad, and then ask yourself, âWhat then?â After answering this question, ask yourself again, âWhat then?â Keep doing this until you get to the bottom of all the potential terrible things. You will likely find that all your worrying and anxiety was pointless.
4) Let Go Of Expectations
Release expectations of yourself, your teacher, and other people in class. In yoga, you might hear that nobody is there to judge you and I think thatâs true. But, people do evaluate you. Your teachers evaluate you because they want to know where you are in your practice and figure out how best to help you. They evaluate me too; itâs just the way humans are, but thereâs no need to worry because whether youâre a first-timer or a veteran, evaluation wonât hurt you but the coaching will help you.
5) Have Fun
Enjoy yourself, smile at those around you, and remember names. You are part of a group, and the way to make your group experience positive for you is to enjoy it and make a connection with others to the best of your abilities. Even if you only remember the name of your teacher, thatâs one person you can call by name the next time you attend a class. Using someoneâs name when you greet them is music to their ears and it doesnât take you much effort. Thereâs a good chance they will remember you too and in the next class youâll no longer be a stranger. If youâd like, you can create respectful relationships with other yogis in the studio. After all, they are just like you, doing yoga to jumpstart their journey to wholeness and health.
6) Introspect
Finally, evaluate and accept your experience. Figure out how yoga has changed and is changing your life. Ask yourself if you want more. Your answer only matters to you. However, if you do decide to return, then do so and continue paying attention, following the guidelines, experimenting, releasing expectations, and having fun.
If you continue yoga, chances are good youâll experience a gradual change â maybe even a life transformation â that while unexplainable, will never be fully realized or accomplished. Yet, even learning to accept the incomplete nature of your life and practice is itself yoga. Trust that itâs working its healing energy on and within you.
