You Become What You Constantly Dwell Upon

Everything you do is a form of 'meditation.' Wherever you direct your attention, whatever you think about deeply, wherever you channel your energy, and whatever occupies your constant thoughts—that is exactly what you are meditating on. Admittedly, this is not the everyday definition we usually associate with the word "meditation," but it is the ultimate truth.

Most people spend their lives constantly meditating on their problems. They dwell on their likes and dislikes. They are perpetually consumed by thoughts of how to be happy, how to live a better life, how to make more money, or how to seek physical pleasure. So, let’s not get lost in semantics here; whatever holds the lion's share of your attention is your meditation.

The structured or religious 'rituals' and mindfulness practices we perform intentionally are, in reality, the best antidote to this 'unconscious, involuntary meditation' that people engage in throughout the day. They provide a much-needed opportunity to shift your focus toward something completely different, something better, and something noble that you have consciously chosen.

Our Quest for Happiness vs. Our True Meditation
Everyone in this world is searching for happiness. Yet, the irony is that most people spend their time meditating on their unhappiness! Throughout the day, the week, and indeed their entire lives, the minds of most individuals remain anchored to the things they dislike—the deficiencies in their lives and the things that make them miserable.

Then, they wonder why their lives are such a chaotic mess. The simple truth is that they have spent a lifetime meditating on misery. Under the guise of trying to avoid or destroy their problems, they constantly think about them, visualize them, and feed them with attention. In doing so, they nurture thoughts and emotions of unhappiness within themselves. And what is the result?

The law is simple: Whatever you constantly dwell upon, you will experience more of. The more you think about it, the more it flows into your reality.

This is because meditation acts as a subconscious attraction mechanism. It functions like a magnet. Wherever your attention goes, a magnetic force is generated.

Unfortunately, most people's attention is locked onto themselves twenty-four hours a day:

"What can I get?"

"How should I feel?"

"What do I need?"

At the core of every single one of these questions is the thought of "Me." It is a state of absolute self-absorption. In that sense, everyone has turned themselves into a living meditation. They are meditating on themselves.

But this is not a productive meditation. It is a restrictive one that confines a human being to a tiny, suffocating box, bringing no real goodness to life.

The Magnetic Force of Negative Thoughts
What you focus on, what you dwell upon, is what you eventually become. Your life overflows with the very things you give your attention to. Like a magnetic field, it wraps around you, and soon enough, it begins to manifest in your physical reality.

Instead of thinking about how to be happy, people are actually meditating on how unhappy they are. Their internal question isn't, "How can I be happy?" It is, "How do I stop this unhappiness?"

"Oh, I feel so sad about this..."

"I don't like that..."

"That project failed..."

"Why did my spouse leave me?"

"My job is absolutely soul-crushing..."

"I don't have enough money..."

"Who is going to pay the rent?"

"The kids won't stop crying..."

This is the daily meditation of the masses. "If only my life were better than this!"—that is the central focus and the ultimate meditation of most individuals.

Therefore, you must ask yourself:

"Am I meditating on unhappiness? Am I constantly thinking about the things I dislike? Am I dwelling on the failures of my past? By obsessing over what I lack, am I pushing abundance further away from me?"

Remember, you are not thinking about attaining those things; you are obsessing over the lack of them. The perspective you hold matters immensely. It defines the very nature of your meditation.

Most people think in terms of lack. Even thinking, "Oh, I wish I had that," is a negative thought rooted in scarcity. The magnetic pull of that thought actually strips that thing away from you, keeping it out of your reach and preventing it from being attracted to you. This is why the everyday meditation of most people is fundamentally negative.

Mind Control and Spiritual Philosophies
This is precisely why all the spiritual traditions and religions of the world, without exception, place immense emphasis on the human thought process and mind control—whether that is their explicit primary goal or not. Every philosophy has something to say about thoughts because your thoughts are your meditation.

The universal truth echoed by all religions and spiritual philosophies is this: "Nothing in this world is created without a thought existing first." That is an absolute certainty.

If thought is the genesis of everything in this life, what kind of thoughts are breeding inside you? You must question yourself:

"What am I dwelling on all day, all week?"

"What does my internal dialogue look like?"

"What kind of thoughts are flowing through me?"

"Where is my attention anchored?"

You must take a brutally honest look at what you are meditating on. If you spend the rest of your day trapped in the wrong meditation—the meditation of negative thoughts—then no matter how diligently you practice the most sublime meditation techniques in the world, you will not get very far.

The Greatest Influence in Your Life is YOU!
People like to believe that they are shaped by the external world, by society, by life events, or by external pressures. It is common to think, "This happened in my life, and that’s why I turned out this way," or "That person ruined me, and that’s why I am like this."

However, compared to this constant mental meditation we perform through our daily thoughts, those external influences are minor—almost negligible. The reality is that you create your own experience. External forces are not that powerful; the greatest influence over you is you.

Therefore, if you are unhappy with your life, the responsibility must be taken by the person who is truly accountable: You.

Make no mistake about it. No other person, no external event, no environment you were born into, and no past story can ever exert a greater influence on your life than the influence you choose to inflict upon yourself.
