🐬 There are only 10 of them left on Earth. And they live in a single 50 km² patch of ocean in Mexico. You’ve probably never heard of them. That’s part of the problem.
Meet the Vaquita (Phocoena sinus) — the world’s smallest porpoise, the world’s rarest cetacean, and the most endangered animal alive on this planet right now.
Here’s what makes this species unlike anything else on Earth:
🌊 It survives water temperatures swinging from 14°C to 36°C — no other cetacean tolerates that
👁️ Those iconic dark panda-like eye rings? Found in absolutely no other species
🔊 It echolocates at >100 kHz — among the highest frequencies in the cetacean world
🧬 Science confirmed in 2022: its genome carries enough diversity to recover — it is NOT genetically doomed

So why is it dying?
