Oud, also known as agarwood, is extracted from the heartwood of the agar tree using a process that involves several steps:

Harvesting: The infected heartwood of the tree is carefully harvested.

Drying: The wood is left to dry for months or years to allow the resin to mature and develop its aroma.

Soaking: The wood is soaked in water for a few months.

Distillation: The wood is placed in large boilers and steamed to evaporate the water and resin. The oud oil floats to the top of the water and is collected in a condenser.

Separation: The pure oud oil is separated from the water and placed in a separate container.
