Let's Talk Menopause 🌸
Menopause and your Brain
As a doctor with more than 30 years of experience in public health and wellness I feel sad that so little time and effort goes into research and treatment of women beyond their reproductive years.
The changes of menopause begin during 40s, a period called perimenopause. This time is seen as a window of vulnerability for women.
So during perimenopause the following symptoms are noticeable:
1. Brain fog (forgetfulness, low mental energy, slower thinking)
2. Anxiety and depression
3. Irritability which increases with sleep disturbances and night sweats .
Why? Because estrogen receptors are found everywhere in the body including skin, blood vessels, liver, heart and most critically the brain.
👍The Alzheimer's connection
Nearly 2/3 patients of Alzheimer's are women. Two factors play a part in this : one, women live longer than men and second , there is a loss of the protective effect of estrogen in menopausal transition.
🌸Estrogen protects the brain from inflammation/amyloid build up, improves neuroplasticity and aids blood flow in the brain.
However , Hormone Replacement Therapy is NOT recommended as a preventive or treatment for cognitive issues in women. In women above 60 or 65 years it may actually increase dementia risk. Studies show that starting HRT earlier for night sweats or other symptoms can play a neutral or protective role on brain health.
👉Women with pre existing depression, severe PMS, post-partum depression, and other mental health are at increased risk and therefore deserve more attention.
Be safe. Be aware and know your body.
