🗝️ IF I OWNED THE BRAND…

Give me a business and I’ll tell you what I would do differently.

I have a habit of looking at businesses and thinking:

If I owned this brand…

I’d change the positioning.
I’d rethink who it’s really for.
I’d change the story.
I’d look at who it should be partnering with.

And I’d ask the bigger question:

Why should anyone choose this brand over the ten others doing something similar?

Because sometimes the problem isn’t the business.

It’s that the brand hasn’t given people a compelling reason to see it differently.

So, each time, I’ll take a different business and show you how I’d position it, where I see the opportunity, and the partnerships I’d pursue if it were mine.

New business. New day. New perspective.

See you daily at 8:30 p.m

Customers may forget what you told them, but they remember how your business made them feel.

For our founder, great customer experience has always been about more than service. It’s about paying attention to the little things that make customers feel valued, heard and genuinely cared for.

That’s the standard we continue to build at SME Growth Lab. 💚

Happy Customer Service Week!

Jackline buying a gym💪 membership for KSh 5,600 a month. She isn't paying for machines, she's paying to become the version of herself who shows up before work.

A founder rents a co-working desk🖥️ instead of staying at the kitchen table, not for faster wifi, but for the version of their business that finally looks like it belongs in the room.

That's identity-based buying, and it explains why listing features rarely closes a sale on its own.
Nobody buys a candle🕯️they buy the version of their evening🌃 that includes it.

Nobody hires a strategist, they buy the version of their business that's finally taken seriously.

If your marketing leads with what the product does, you're selling the vehicle and skipping the destination. Show who someone becomes after choosing you, and the product sells itself.

A wellness clinic🏥 posts about a new treatment in March. In June, a client tags them in a before-and-after story. By September, a retargeting ad shows up, and instead of scrolling past, the person taps to book.

That's the exposure effect. The same brand appearing across different moments stops registering as advertising and starts registering as something already known.

A furnitur🪑 brand running ads alone gets seen once, and once isn't enough to feel familiar. A brand that already showed up in a friend's home tour, then a client review, then a retargeted post isn't being sold to anymore, it's being recognized.

If your visibility lives in a single channel, you're asking a stranger to trust you off one glance.

Repeat the same story across organic, referral, and paid until seeing your brand stops requiring a decision.

One person moves. The crowd follows.

That's social proof, a core principle in consumer psychology. People rarely decide alone, they look at what others are already doing and follow.

A restaurant with a queue outside pulls in more walk-ins than an empty one with better food🍲

A salon🪮 with a wall of client transformations converts more first-time 👣 bookings than one with just a price list

If your marketing shows off your product before it shows off your customers, you're leading with the wrong signal. Put the proof first: reviews, before-and-afters, the queue, the sold-out sign. Let people see other people choosing you.

🤑 🫰 KSh 200,000. Then KSh 150,000. Then KSh 100,000.

That's anchoring. The first price someone sees becomes the benchmark for every price after it, even when the number alone would look expensive on its own.

A restaurant menu🍸 that opens with a KSh 5,000 dish makes the KSh 2,000 dish look reasonable. A real estate listing that shows the KSh 20M house first makes the KSh 12M house feel like the smart .

If you lead with your lowest price, you skip the moment that makes everything else feel affordable. Set the higher reference point first, then let your real offer feel like the obvious choice.

Two envelopes✉️ Same KSh 100,000. Two completely different reactions.

That's loss aversion. Losing something stings more than gaining the same thing feels good.

An online shopper 🛒 won't add to cart for a discount as fast as they'll check out to avoid missing limited stock.
A hotel 🛌 guest won't book for the amenities as fast as they'll book to avoid losing a rate or a date.

If your ads and captions🫣 always lead with the upside, you're skipping the sharper message.

Show people what they're already losing by waiting, not just what they'll gain by buying.

Long post ⚠️ but worth the read.

Hills I’ll die on as a Brand Strategist who studies why Kenyans buy 👇🏾

1. 10K followers mean nothing if people still don't understand what you actually do.

2. “Affordable and quality” is not a positioning strategy. Everyone says it.

3. The way you handle customers on WhatsApp is part of your brand. Not an afterthought.

4. A business built entirely on referrals can still have weak positioning.

5. Posting every day won't sell an offer people don't understand.

6. “We serve Nairobi and beyond” tells me where you operate, not why I should choose you.

7. “Let me get back to you” isn't automatically a price objection.

8. Copying what successful brands are doing won't give you their market position.

9. Being the cheapest may win a transaction. It doesn't automatically win customer preference.

10. A customer doesn't owe you a sale simply because you've worked hard on your business.

But this is the one I’ll really die on:

If you need five minutes to explain why someone should buy from you, you may not have a visibility problem.

You may have a positioning problem.

DM “FULL LIST” and I’ll send you the full breakdown.

Posting daily won't generate leads if you lack the infrastructure to capture them. Without a reliable funnel, a trustworthy brand voice, or a cohesive strategy that unites SEO, content, ads, and social media, you cannot effectively convert viewers into clients.

We go beyond simply filling your content calendar. We build the foundational strategy underneath it, managing your positioning, funnels, and ads so that every piece of content drives real business outcomes.

You don't need a higher volume of posts. You need a system that converts attention into revenue.

You can get thousands of new eyeballs on your business.

But when they land on your page, website or content, can they quickly understand why they should choose you?

Do not compete on the same features as your competitors.

If everyone is saying “quality”, “affordable prices” and “excellent service”, you are giving people very little reason to choose one business over another.

Positioning creates clarity around what makes your business different, who it is for and why that difference matters.

Visibility opens the door. Positioning gives people a reason to walk through it.

Before investing more in getting seen, make sure your business is clear enough to be chosen.
