Rising dramatically nearly 200 meters (660 feet) above the lush green plains of central Sri Lanka, Sigiriya—or the Lion Rock—is a magnificent ancient rock fortress and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is widely considered by locals and travelers alike as the "Eighth Wonder of the World."
A Brief History
Built in the 5th century AD by King Kashyapa, Sigiriya served as both a royal palace and an impregnable fortress. Following a dramatic family rivalry, Kashyapa moved the capital to Sigiriya to create a secure stronghold and a masterpiece of art and architecture. After his death, it was used as a Buddhist monastery until the 14th century.
Standing tall at nearly 200 meters, Sigiriya is the ultimate testament to ancient Sri Lankan engineering, art, and royalty. From the iconic Lion Paws to the breathtaking summit views, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is an absolute must-visit! 🦁🏯✨
