Malawi has launched the 2025 commemoration of the 16 Days of Activism Against Violence Against Women and Girls, with calls for stronger action against both physical and digital gender-based violence.

Speaking at the press briefing at Capital hill, Lilongwe, Minister of Gender Mary Navicha said the campaign provides a platform for government, civil society, and communities to unite in addressing rising cases of online harassment, cyberbullying, image-based abuse, and exploitation.

She warned that one in three Malawian children experience cyberbullying, with women and girls facing increasing digital threats.

UN Women Deputy Representative Fatma Mohammed highlighted persistent inequalities, noting that one in three women experience physical violence and 42 percent were married before 18.

She reaffirmed UN Women’s commitment to supporting legal reforms, digital literacy, and accountability.

The national launch took place at Khwisa Primary School in Balaka.
