In spiritual and philosophical contexts, "the secret of karma" usually refers to karma as the natural law of cause and effect generated by our thoughts, words, and actions.1,2,3,4

Core definition of karma

The Sanskrit term "karma" literally translates to "action", and in spiritual teachings it is not framed as a cosmic reward-and-punishment system, but as a universal principle of imprint, momentum, and consequence.1,2,3,4

What the "secret" of karma refers to

The core insight of karma is that it is not limited to visible deeds: it also includes the intentions behind actions, repeated thoughts, spoken words, and the reactions we display.2,3,4,5 These elements leave lasting impressions on the mind and soul, shaping our habits, tendencies, and the unfolding of our life experiences over time.1,2,3

Common misunderstandings of karma

Not a debt collector: Most spiritual teachings frame karma as a natural, impersonal system rather than a divine judge that punishes or rewards people.1,6

Not just "what goes around comes around": This popular phrase only captures a small part of karma's meaning; the full concept includes intention, mental impressions, and the long-term ripening of actions.2,3,4,5

Not only about this lifetime: In many spiritual traditions, karma is also understood to carry across future lives, though this specific interpretation varies by belief system.3,6,7
