𝐀𝐈𝐂𝐁 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐅𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞-𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡-𝐋𝐞𝐝 𝐅𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐀𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐞

The Asian Institute of Chartered Bankers (AICB) is calling for stronger intelligence-sharing, responsible use of technology and closer cooperation across the financial ecosystem as financial crime becomes more sophisticated and increasingly crosses institutions, platforms and borders.

The call was made at the 16th International Conference on Financial Crime and Counter Terrorism Financing (IFCTF 2026), amid concern over the growing scale of scams in Malaysia. Publicly reported scam losses reached RM2.8 billion in 2025.

AICB said financial institutions need to move beyond isolated alerts and connect information across bank accounts, telecommunications networks, digital platforms and enforcement investigations to detect suspicious activity earlier.

Bank Negara Malaysia Governor Datuk Seri Abdul Rasheed Ghaffour said financial crime prevention must shift from a reactive model towards predictive and ultimately preventive approaches by turning transaction data into actionable intelligence.

Artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced analytics can strengthen monitoring, investigations and risk detection, although the same technologies are also being exploited by criminals to conduct fraud and other illicit activities at greater speed and scale.

AICB chairman Tan Sri Azman Hashim said technology alone was insufficient, with skilled professionals needed to interpret intelligence and make effective decisions.

IFCTF 2026 also covered anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing, AI and analytics, fraud, corruption, digital assets, governance and organisational resilience.

SIBU (Aug 29): The seventh edition of the Sibu Jaya Waterfiesta, organised by AmCorp and Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC), drew a large crowd at the Azman Hashim Community Sports Centre in Sibu Jaya on Saturday, reflecting growing community participation in the annual festival.

Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said both the scale of the festival and community participation had increased since its first edition.

“This is the seventh time the festival has been held, and from year to year, we can see an increase in both the scale of the festival and the involvement of the community.

“I think today there are more than 10,000 people here,” he said when met by reporters during the event.

He also said such activities could bring together people from different backgrounds, allowing them to interact and strengthen ties.

“What is quite interesting about this festival is that it is community-based, with all communities involved, including the Dayak, Malay and Chinese communities.

“Another thing that is very interesting is how the festival brings families together. Those involved in the festival include everyone, from young children and grandchildren to parents and grandparents,” he said.

On haze concerns, Abdul Karim said the situation in Sibu Jaya that morning was not as bad as in other areas, including Kuching.

“Right now, I can see several kilometres away. If we can see several kilometres away, it means the air here is relatively clear.

“The API readings may not be good in some places, but here in Sibu Jaya, I think the situation is okay and there is no major problem at the moment,” he said.

Also present during the event were SRDC chairman Sempurai Petrus Ngelai, SRDC vice-chairman Wong Ching Yong, Political Secretary to the Premier of Sarawak Joshua Ting, AmCorp Properties Chief Executive Officer Azlan Baqee Abdullah and other invited guests.
