HOW TO KNOW IF YOU ARE DILATING.

Knowing if you are dilating, meaning your cervix is opening in preparation for labor, is important for understanding where you are in the labor process. While a medical professional is the only one who can accurately measure cervical dilation through a va**nal exam, there are some signs and symptoms you can watch for that may indicate your body is progressing toward labor.

Here are some ways to know if you might be dilating:

You may feel a heavy, downward pressure in your pelvis or va**na. This happens as the baby drops lower into your pelvis (a process called “lightening”), which often accompanies dilation and effacement (thinning) of the cervix.
