*Silencing the “If”*
_"And the d3vil said to Him, 'If You are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.'... Then he brought Him to Jerusalem, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, 'If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here.'"_ — Luke 4:3, 9 NKJV
_____
In Luke 4, the devil tempted Jesus with a subtle but powerful weapon: “If You are the Son of God…” The enemy was not just questioning action—he was attacking identity.
In marriage, this same strategy often shows up in our hearts through the “if” question:
- If he truly loves me, he would do this…
- If she really cares, she wouldn’t have done that…
These thoughts may seem harmless, but they are deeply destructive.
Every unmet expectation can quietly become a courtroom, where our spouse is put on trial for their love. We begin to evaluate them based on a single action—or the absence of one. But a moment was never meant to be the measure of a covenant.
The “if” subtly shifts our focus. It moves our eyes away from God’s purpose for the marriage and fixes them on our spouse’s performance. It turns marriage into a transaction of proofs rather than a testimony of grace.
The truth is this:
Your spouse’s love, value, and sincerity cannot be accurately measured by one action—or even a moment of failure.
When we reduce love to performance, we create room for doubt, offense, and emotional distance. But Jesus did not respond to “if” by trying to prove Himself—He stood firmly on truth.
In the same way, a marriage that brings God’s glory is not built on constant emotional validation, but on alignment with God’s will. It is a marriage where both husband and wife are more committed to doing what pleases God than demanding proof and validation from each other.
Mature love says:
I will not let a moment define the whole.
I will not allow doubt to override truth.
I will focus on God’s purpose, not emotional assumptions.
When we silence the “if,” we protect the unity, stability, and spiritual strength of our marriage.
🙇🏽♀️ *Reflect*
1. What “if” thoughts have I allowed to shape my perception of my spouse?
2. In what ways have I measured my spouse’s love based on isolated moments?
💕*Couple's Connect*
Share one recent situation where assumptions or unmet expectations affected your relationship. Listen to each other with grace, clarify your hearts without defensiveness, and pray together, asking God to keep your marriage anchored in His truth rather than assumptions.
🙏🏽 *Prayer*
Lord, help me to silence every “if” that brings doubt and confusion into my heart. Teach me to stand on truth and to relate with my spouse in love, grace, and maturity. Ame

*Silencing the “If” (Part 2): When “If” Becomes Judgment*
_“Now when the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this, he spoke to himself, saying, ‘This Man, if He were a prophet, would know who and what manner of woman this is who is touching Him, for she is a sinner.’”_ - Luke 7:39
_______
In Luke 7:39, the Pharisee said within himself, _“If this man were a prophet...”_
Here again, we see the subtle but dangerous power of the “if.”
But this time, it is not questioning love—it is questioning identity and worth.
The Pharisee reduced the woman to her past. In his mind, her history defined her value. And because of that, he began to judge both her and Jesus.
This same pattern often finds its way into marriage.
“If you were truly a good husband…”
“If you were really the woman of God I thought…”
“If you had really changed…”
And suddenly, our spouse is no longer seen through the lens of grace, but through the lens of judgment.
The “if” becomes a tool that magnifies faults and diminishes identity. It fixes our focus on weaknesses instead of God’s ongoing work.
But Jesus responded differently. He saw beyond her past. He recognized her love. He affirmed her transformation.
A marriage that glorifies God must learn to see the way Christ sees. Your spouse is not just who they were. They are who God is forming them to be.
When we allow the “if” to dominate our thinking:
* We begin to define our spouse by their worst moments
* We become critical instead of compassionate
* We shift from partnering with God’s work to resisting it
But when we silence the “if”:
* We make room for grace
* We honor God’s work in our spouse
* We relate from love, not suspicion
Your marriage was never meant to be a courtroom of judgment - it is meant to be a place of transformation and grace.
🙇🏽♀️ *Reflect*
1. Have I been silently judging my spouse based on their past or weaknesses?
2. Am I seeing my spouse through God’s grace or through my expectations?
💕 *Couple's Connect*
Take a few moments to affirm one area where you have seen God changing your spouse, even if the progress seems small. Thank God together for His ongoing work in each of your lives, and pray for the grace to see one another through Christ's eyes.
🙏🏽 *Prayer*
Lord, help me to see my spouse the way You see them. Remove every judgmental “if” from my heart. Teach me to walk in grace, patience, and love.
Always stand for yourself
