A young pastor in Uganda was killed only hours after publicly defending his Christian faith. Pastor Ronald Kibuuka, 25, had participated in a Christian-Muslim debate in Butebo District where a large crowd gathered to hear both sides. Several people expressed interest in Christianity following the discussion. Later that evening, while Kibuuka was making his way home, he was attacked and killed. Police opened an investigation, with local accounts identifying an imam among the principal suspects.

Pastor Kibuuka was only 25, yet his willingness to openly proclaim Jesus ultimately came at an enormous cost. His death is another sobering reminder that Christians in many parts of the world still face danger simply for sharing the Gospel. Please pray for his grieving family and church, for justice in his killing, and for believers throughout Uganda to remain courageous. The servants of God can be silenced on earth, but the Gospel of Jesus Christ cannot be stopped. ✝️🙏

🇩🇿 Algerian police have arrested 12 Christians during a worship service at the House of Refuge center in L’Ayaida, near Oran.

The center provides shelter and support for vulnerable women and their families.

Police seized Christian literature, mobile phones and identity cards and transported the 12 worshippers to Bethioua police station.

The Christians could face charges under Algeria’s Ordinance 06-03 regulating non-Muslim worship. Violations covered by the law can carry sentences of 2–5 years in prison and fines of 500,000–1 million Algerian dinars (€3,250–€6,500).

Nearly all 47 churches affiliated with the Protestant Church of Algeria have received closure orders or been sealed, while more than 50 Christians have faced prosecution over their faith in recent years.

Before the Gospel Stage: The Early Acting Years of Tope Alabi

Long before Tope Alabi became one of Nigeria's most recognisable gospel voices, she was a young actress moving through the world of Yoruba theatre and film.

This vintage photograph is said to capture Tope Alabi during the earlier stage of her career, before gospel music would eventually make her a household name across Nigeria.

Today, she is celebrated as a gospel singer, songwriter and composer. But her journey into music ministry was preceded by years of acting, theatre and film soundtrack production.

From Theatre to Film

Born Patricia Temitope Alabi on 27 October 1970 in Lagos, Tope Alabi developed an interest in music and drama while growing up in Ibadan. She attended Oba Akinyele Memorial High School before studying Mass Communication at The Polytechnic, Ibadan, where she graduated in 1990.

Her passion for performance had already taken root during her secondary-school years.

In an interview with Punch, Alabi recalled joining Jesters International in 1983, where she acted alongside theatre personalities including Papilolo and Aderupoko. She later joined other theatre groups and eventually became associated with the Alade Aromire Theatre Group.

It was within this theatrical environment that another side of her talent began to emerge.

The Actress Who Found Her Voice in Soundtracks

While working in theatre and on film locations, Alabi was known for singing. A colleague eventually suggested that she could compose songs for films.

She took up the challenge.

Her first soundtrack work grew from the Yoruba film and theatre circuit, where she began writing and performing songs specifically for productions. In another interview, she recalled that her first soundtrack came after someone heard her singing on location and encouraged her to try composing for films.

What initially appeared to be another skill soon became one of the defining features of her early career.

Alabi became a prominent voice behind the soundtracks of Yoruba-language films, composing songs that helped establish the mood and emotional identity of productions. Various biographical accounts credit her with hundreds of movie soundtracks, although the exact number varies between sources.

Her work in this field earned her a reputation as one of the leading soundtrack voices of the Yoruba home-video era.

Before 'Ore Ti O Common'

Her transition into gospel music did not happen overnight.

Alabi had already spent years in theatre, acting and soundtrack composition before releasing her breakthrough gospel album, Ore Ti O Common, in 2001. The album introduced a wider audience to the distinctive voice that would eventually become synonymous with her ministry.

From there, albums such as Iwe Eri, Agbara Re Ni, Agbara Olorun, Angeli Mi, Kokoro Igbala, Kabiosi, Agbelebu, Alagbara and Oruko Tuntun helped establish her place in Nigerian gospel music.

Her musical identity combined Yoruba language, traditional musical elements, contemporary arrangements and Christian worship, helping her reach audiences far beyond the film industry where she began.

A Career That Came Full Circle

Interestingly, acting never completely disappeared from Alabi's life.

In a 2020 interview, she explained that although music had become her full-time career, she continued to have an interest in acting. She later returned to acting and filmmaking, including producing and starring in the Christian film The Weight.

Her journey therefore forms an unusual circle: the actress became a soundtrack composer, the soundtrack composer became a gospel singer, and the gospel singer eventually returned to filmmaking.

That makes photographs from her early entertainment years particularly valuable.

They show a side of Tope Alabi that can easily be forgotten today: the young performer who was still finding her place in Nigeria's theatre and film world, years before she became known across the country as a gospel minister.

The woman many Nigerians now recognise from worship stages and gospel recordings once spent her formative years on theatre stages and film locations, learning how to act, sing, write and create.

Before the gospel albums came the theatre.

Before the worship stages came the film sets.

And before the voice became nationally famous, there was a young actress discovering that her voice could tell a story.

A TRIBUTE TO ARCHBISHOP BENSON ANDREW IDAHOSA
The Father of Nigerian Charismatic Pentecostalism.

Born on 11 September 1938 in Benin City, Edo State, Archbishop Benson Idahosa rose from humble beginnings to become a towering voice of faith, courage and possibility.

His story reminds us that where you begin does not determine how far God can take you. From hardship emerged a preacher whose message would travel far beyond his hometown and inspire generations.

After giving his life to Christ in 1959, he devoted himself to spreading the gospel with extraordinary boldness. Through Church of God Mission International, he carried that message into streets, stadiums, radio and television, helping shape Nigeria’s charismatic Pentecostal movement.

But his greatest legacy was also in people. His teachings and example influenced ministers including Bishop David Oyedepo, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, Pastor Matthew Ashimolowo and Bishop Mike Okonkwo, whose ministries would reach audiences across the world.

Through Benson Idahosa University and All Nations for Christ Bible Institute, his passion for education, faith and leadership continues to touch lives.

On 12 March 1998, he departed this world, but the impact of his ministry endured.

Today, we celebrate an Edo icon whose life challenged people to believe boldly, rise above limitations and pursue their calling.

Rest on, General. We are still running with the fire you lit.

Edo remembers you with pride. Your voice still echoes through the generations you inspired.
