Every morning at 6 AM, a tired-looking nurse bought the smallest coffee and a day-old muffin at our diner. Always counted her change twice.
One morning, she was short $1.50. Started apologizing, putting items back.
The cook walked out from the kitchen with a fresh breakfast plate. “Kitchen mistake,” he lied. “Can’t return it. Might as well eat it.”
She cried into her coffee.
Turns out, she’d been working double shifts, sleeping in her car, saving every penny for her sister’s surgery.
That week, regulars started “accidentally” ordering extra meals. The cook kept “making mistakes” she couldn’t return.
She never knew it was on purpose.
Last month, she brought us all coffee and donuts. Showed us a photo of her sister, healthy and smiling.
Some people think kindness is expensive. It’s not. It’s just showing up. ゚
