FEEDING IN THE MANAGEMENT OF SEVERE ACUTE MALNUTRITION (SAM) USING F-75 AND F-100/RUTF

I have been getting request that I should post about this and I will be giving more about F-75,F-100 and RUTF subscribe to get more

Feeding is a critical component in the treatment of severe acute malnutrition. It must be introduced carefully, in small and frequent amounts, because a severely malnourished child's body cannot tolerate large amounts of food immediately. Feeding too aggressively or providing foods high in protein and sodium can overwhelm the body's systems, leading to serious complications.

During the stabilization phase, feeding begins with F-75, also known as the starter formula. F-75 provides 75 kcal of energy and 0.9 g of protein per 100 ml. It is low in protein and sodium but rich in carbohydrates, making it safe and suitable for the initial treatment phase.

After the child is stabilized, usually within 2–7 days, feeding progresses to the catch-up phase using F-100. This therapeutic milk helps rebuild lost tissues and promote weight gain. F-100 provides 100 kcal of energy and 2.9 g of protein per 100 ml. During the transition phase, F-75 is replaced with the same volume of F-100 (or RUTF where F-100 is unavailable).

Proper feeding saves lives and is a key step in the recovery of children with severe acute malnutrition.

FOOD AS MEDICINE

How Diet Can Treat Common Diseases?

Many people think medicine only comes from the hospital… but the truth is, your daily food can prevent and even help manage many diseases.

LET’S BREAK IT DOWN

1. HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE (Hypertension)
Reducing salt and eating foods rich in potassium like banana, spinach, and beans can help control blood pressure naturally.

2. DIABETES (High Blood Sugar)
Eating high-fiber foods like whole grains, vegetables, and legumes helps slow sugar absorption and maintain stable blood glucose levels.

3. ULCER (Stomach Issues)
Soft, non-spicy foods like pap (ogi), boiled rice, and yogurt can help reduce irritation and support healing.

4. CONSTIPATION
Fruits, vegetables, and water are powerful medicine. Fiber helps your digestive system work properly.

KEY MESSAGE:
Food is not just for eating… it is a powerful tool for healing.

BUT REMEMBER:
Diet works best when combined with proper medical advice from a professional.
