From waste, to felt, to furniture.

This custom Cubics cabinet is finished with Rezign Army Veneer, made from discarded Dutch military uniforms.
We took the material from its original context, transformed it into something new, and brought it back to where the story started: the offices of the Dutch Ministry of Defence.
From old army wear to a new piece of furniture, closing the loop in a meaningful way.

We received these images from a relative working in the Port of Rotterdam.

Coffee and cocoa are transported around the world in jute bags, traditionally designed for a single journey. During unloading, dockworkers use metal hooks to move the bags. These hooks often tear or damage the jute, leaving the bags unsuitable for reuse in their original form.

For us, that is where the material story starts.

Instead of treating the damaged bags as waste, we collect and process the jute fibres into new sheet materials. The bags are opened up, shredded and reformed into Rezign materials, while keeping the natural colour, texture and irregularities of the original fibres visible.

These panels and veneers can then be used to make furniture and interior elements: from tables and cabinets to counters, wall finishes and other custom applications.

What once carried coffee can therefore become part of the furniture and spaces in which coffee is served.

A waste stream becomes a new raw material, with its origin still visible in the final product.

Biodegradable binder + biobased fiber = a chair that leaves no trace

We knew there was a lot of flax in this project for
We didn’t realise it was more than 10 tonnes.

A pretty fitting material story for such an iconic piece of Rotterdam’s industrial heritage bringing biobased materials into a building with a strong architectural history.

Across 26 office units, flax is used in the walls, ceilings, insulation and Rezign Acoustic panels. Add the solid pine structure and window frames, and you end up with around 13 tonnes of renewable biomass.

The outside finish also adds to the sustainable impact, using upcycled Dutch army textiles by -did

That represents roughly 22 tonnes of biogenic CO₂ stored in the materials, CO₂ that was taken from the atmosphere while the flax and timber were growing, and is now locked into the interior for as long as those materials remain in use.

What makes it even more interesting is that these materials don’t only work from a sustainability point of view. They also have to compete with conventional materials on the things that actually matter in a project: acoustics, performance and price.

That’s when biobased gets exciting: when it’s not the alternative, but simply a really good material choice.

It starts with what others leave behind.

Textile waste is given a new purpose as our makers shape, sand and assemble every piece by hand. Their knowledge of the material turns discarded fibres into furniture made with care and character.

From waste to chair. Designed to look right, feel right and stand for something better.

Design starts on a few blank sheets of paper.
From the first lines, the Unusual Chair begins to reveal its character. As the sketch develops, shape, balance and detail come together in a design that feels both distinctive and refined.

A small look into the design process behind the Unusual Chair.
