From foundational principles to evolving techniques in wound management, the UP-PGH Department of Dermatology’s 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗪𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲 gathered clinicians and healthcare professionals for a day of practical learning and meaningful exchange last May 8, 2026 at St. Francis Shangri-La Place.

Through expert-led discussions and interactive sessions, participants deepened their knowledge on evidence-based wound care and multidisciplinary approaches to improving patient outcomes.

Dermatology plays a critical role in bridging skin pathology and wound healing. This lecture highlights the dermatologist’s approach to wound assessment and management, emphasizing accurate diagnosis of underlying dermatoses, optimization of the wound environment, infection control, and integration of medical and procedural therapies.

Dr. Val Constantine Cua is an affiliate physician of the UP–Philippine General Hospital Department of Dermatology and a member of its Complex Wound Care and Hair and Nails Division. He is also an active consultant in various institutions in Manila and Agusan del Norte. After completing his dermatology residency training at UP–PGH, he pursued further fellowship trainings in advanced wound care, hair and nail disorders, and dermatologic surgery. Dr. Cua has been an invited speaker at several local and international conferences, sharing his expertise in wound management and the dermatologic approach to hair and nail disorders.

Nicole Marella G. Tan, MD, FPDS is a dermatologist specializing in complex wound care, with affiliations at UP–Philippine General Hospital and leading dermatology centers. With training in both local and international settings, she offers a well-rounded perspective on managing patients beyond the wound itself.

Pressure injuries are often seen as inevitable, but many are actually preventable. 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝗷𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 looks at how and why these wounds develop, and what we can realistically do in day-to-day practice to reduce risk and improve outcomes. From choosing the right support surfaces to simple repositioning strategies, this session focuses on practical decisions that make a difference at the bedside.

Jay-V James G. Barit, MD, FPDS is a dermatologist and consultant at the UP–PGH Department of Dermatology. With experience in inpatient care and complex wounds, he brings a clear and practical approach to managing pressure injuries across different clinical settings.
