The Woman Was Dyingโ€”Then the Cross of Jesus Revealed Itself

But there was no way to tell which Cross was His.

Then a dying woman was brought forward.

And according to an ancient Christian account, the Cross of Christ revealed itself through her healing.

In the fourth century, St. Helena, the mother of Emperor Constantine, traveled to Jerusalem.

She wanted to find the places connected with the Passion of Christ.

At the time, the traditional site of Calvary and the Holy Sepulchre had been covered over and built upon.

According to early Christian sources, excavations were undertaken near Calvary.

Then came the discovery.

Three crosses were found.

But the inscription that had identified Jesus as โ€œKing of the Jewsโ€ was no longer attached to the Cross.

Which one was Christ's?

The answer was still hidden.

St. Macarius, Bishop of Jerusalem, was present.

He needed a way to distinguish the Cross of Jesus from the other two.

Then an extraordinary opportunity appeared.

A woman in Jerusalem was suffering from a grave illness and was near death.

Macarius ordered that the three crosses be brought to her one by one.

The first Cross was brought to the dying woman.

It touched her.

Nothing happened.

She remained gravely ill.

The second Cross was placed against her.

Again, nothing changed.

She remained at the point of death.

Then came the third.

The third Cross touched the woman.

According to the account preserved by the fourth-century historian Sozomen, she was immediately healed.

The Cross that brought healing was identified as the Cross upon which Christ had been crucified.

The ancient tradition therefore connected the miraculous healing directly with the identification of the True Cross.

St. Helena had searched for the Cross because she desired to recover and honor the places associated with Jesus' Passion.

She was not searching for a treasure of gold.

She was searching for the wood associated with the greatest sacrifice in human history.

The discovery became one of the most important traditions connected with Jerusalem.

The Emperor Constantine then built magnificent churches at the sites of Calvary and the Holy Sepulchre. Their dedication in Jerusalem in 335 became closely connected with the liturgical celebration of the Cross.

The Church eventually established the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, celebrated on September 14.

The feast is connected with the ancient celebration in Jerusalem and with the history of the Cross, including its discovery and later restoration to Jerusalem after being taken by the Persians.

The Vatican explains that the feast commemorates the discovery of the Cross by St. Helena and its later return to the Holy City under Emperor Heraclius.

It is not a celebration of suffering for its own sake.

It is an exaltation of the Cross of Jesus Christโ€”the instrument through which God revealed His love and brought salvation.

As Pope Francis explained, the Cross that appeared to represent defeat became the sign of Christ's victory over sin and death.

A dying woman.

Three ancient crosses.

One miraculous healing.

And a saintly woman who had traveled to Jerusalem searching for the Cross of her Savior.

The Cross that once looked like an instrument of shame became the symbol of Christian hope.

The Cross of Christ was found.

And the Church continues to lift it high.

โ€œWe adore You, O Christ, and we bless You, because by Your Holy Cross You have redeemed the world.โ€

Holy Cross of Jesus, be our hope and our salvation. ๐Ÿ™โœ๏ธโค๏ธ

There is nothing on earth quite like the beauty of the Catholic Church.

For centuries, the Church has inspired some of the greatest architecture, painting, sculpture, music and craftsmanship in human history, not simply to impress, but to direct the mind toward God.

Every arch, altar, fresco, statue, vestment and hymn was meant to communicate something greater than itself: that the sacred deserves beauty, reverence and sacrifice.

Catholic art was never created merely to decorate a building. It was created to teach, to elevate the soul, and to make visible something of the invisible.

MARYโ€™S BIRTHDAY: HOW DID THE CHURCH KNOW WHEN THE MOTHER OF JESUS WAS BORN?

September 8, Catholics around the world will celebrate something remarkable:

The birthday of the Mother of Jesus.

But here is the question many people have never asked:

How did the Church know when Mary was born when the Bible never gives us her birthday?

The answer takes us into Scripture, ancient Christian tradition and the history of the Church.

1. The Bible Does Not Give Maryโ€™s Date of Birth.
The New Testament tells us a great deal about Mary: she was chosen to become the Mother of Jesus, she received the message of the Angel Gabriel, visited Elizabeth, stood at the foot of the Cross and was present with the apostles after the Resurrection. But Scripture never gives us the exact date, or even the year, of her birth. So September 8 is not a date taken directly from the Bible.

2. The Date Comes From Ancient Christian Tradition.
The celebration of Mary's Nativity is very ancient. Christians in the East were celebrating it centuries ago, and the feast eventually spread to the Western Church. Tradition preserved the Church's memory of Mary's birth even though the New Testament does not record the date.
This is important: the Church is not claiming that someone found a birth certificate for Mary. Rather, the date belongs to the Church's ancient liturgical tradition.

3. Why September 8? There Is an Interesting Connection.
The date of Mary's Nativity is closely connected with the ancient feast of her conception and with the dedication of a church in Jerusalem associated with her birth. The tradition surrounding Mary's birthplace developed very early, particularly around the area near the Pool of Bethesda.
The exact historical details surrounding Mary's birth cannot be established with the same certainty as events recorded in Scripture. But the liturgical celebration itself became firmly established in Christian tradition.

4. The Church Celebrates Her Birth Because of Who She Is.
Why does the Church celebrate Mary's birthday at all?
Because Mary's birth is understood in relation to her unique mission in salvation history. She would become the Mother of the Saviour.
The Church therefore celebrates not merely the birth of an important woman, but the birth of the woman chosen by God to cooperate uniquely in the coming of Christ.
As the Catechism teaches, Mary was prepared by God's grace for her mission as the Mother of the Redeemer.

5. September 8 Is a Liturgical Tradition, Not a Claim of Absolute Historical Certainty.
This is perhaps the most important point.
Catholics can confidently celebrate the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary on September 8 without pretending that Scripture gives us her exact birth date.
The Church's liturgy preserves an ancient Christian tradition. The precise historical date of Mary's birth remains unknown.

So when Catholics say:
โ€œHappy Birthday, Mary!โ€
they are celebrating an ancient feast handed down in the Church, not claiming that the Bible gives September 8 as her birth certificate date.

In simple words, the Bible does not tell us Mary's birthday.
September 8 comes from the ancient tradition and liturgical life of the Church, which preserved and celebrated Mary's Nativity from the early centuries of Christianity.
We may not know the exact historical date Mary was born, but the Church has remembered and celebrated her birth for many centuries.

Now you know.

If the Bible does not give Mary's birthday, did you ever wonder how the Church knew when to celebrate it?
